THE AUSTRALIAN SCIENCE FICTION BULLSHEET #163 MARCH 2 2001

Fiction Association by Marc Ortlieb, P.O. Box 215, Forest Hill,

IN A DISUSED LAVATORY WITH A SIGN ON THE DOOR SAYING BEWARE OF
THE LEOPARD (THE 2001 DITMAR NOMINATIONS)

The Swancon 2001 autonomous Ditmar sub-committee has managed to
squeeze the nomination period for the Ditmars between
fortnightly issues of the Bullsheet! Remind me to get the
sub-committee a job packing sardines. I figure they'd get
twenty to the tin.

Anyway, I received a nomination ballot on February 19th. The
deadline for ballots is March 3rd, giving about thirteen days
for people to get their nominations in. A nominating ballot is
available at the Swancon website
http://www.sf.org.au/swancon2001, but, if you're receiving this
issue in paper, you've probably missed it. All Australian
science fiction fans are eligible to nominate.

David Cake noted "I believe a small number of nomination forms,
as far as we know all addressed to Victoria, were distributed
late. Most people should have got theirs some time ago. The
voting forms will be available in late March, IIRC. The voting
forms will only be distributed to members of the con, however,
as only they are eligible."

I guess my major concern is that a fan group doesn't seem
willing to use the existing fan channels to distribute
nomination forms. With an Easter Natcon, nomination forms
should have been widely distributed in early January. While I
agree that only members of the Natcon can vote, I also feel
that voting forms, including a Swancon 2001 membership form,
should be widely distributed. If nothing else, everyone who
made the effort should nominate should receive a voting form
with the opportunity to join and vote.

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH

Sue Ann Barber and the MSFC got the better part of half
a page in The Moreland Sentinel 5/2/2001. The article featured
a photo of Sue Ann in the MSFC Library and the heading Sci-Fi
fantasyland. Garth Nix is the featured writer in The Sunday
Age's Influences Column 18/2/2001. He blames his writing on his
mother reading Lord of the Rings while pregnant with him.
Sophie Masson gets a letter on the diversity of French culture
in The Australian review of Books February 2001. Jan Tully
appeared on Channel 10's "After Midnight" an 14/2/2001. Sally
Beasley notes "Dave Luckett, Stephen Dedman and Ian Nichols
are all regularly writing reviews for our local newspaper, The
West Australian, and occasional articles as well." Craig
Macbride notes "I was featured throughout an article on bank
fees in the Sunday Age's magazine, Sunday Life, 18/2/01. ...
And they spelt my name correctly!" Now why didn't I read that?
(Sorry Craig. I'm a regular reader of The Sunday Age, but my
eyes glaze over the moment I see anything to do with finances.)

ANTIFAN FILMS

Mark Loney has been looking into ways of preserving the
two Anti-Fan movies which were made to promote the Aussiecon
and Sydney in '83 Worldcon bids respectively. He reports

"ScreenSound Australia have got back to me about the
AntiFan films.

The short version is:

a) They would like to assimilate the AntiFan films into their
collection;

b) In doing so, they will make digital tape master in betacam
format for their own purposes;

c) On the proviso that we donate the films to them, they will
provide us with video tape copies at cost;

d) If we are interested in having our own video copies, that
process will take two to three months (which is how long it
will be before they make their own video tape copies).

Anyone who wants a VHS copy of their own should order
one at the bargain price of $10.50 (plus postage) which will
bring to total cost for delivery to an address in Australia to
about $15. Anyone who wants a copy in either format should
contact me (lo...@alphalink.com.au or PO Box 181, Campbell ACT
2612).

NICK STATHOPOULOS WEB SITE

Deborah Biancotti noted on the Eidolist "Anyone interested in
the art of Nick Stathopoulos should check out his website,
including a couple of photos of his Icarus exhibition launch
last Friday night in Newtown, Sydney.

KAREN ON LINE

Karen Johnson reports "I've started writing articles
for themestream.com.Themestream is a website that lets people
write columns/articles, and they pay you two cents US each time
someone actually reads your stuff. I've been writing for two
weeks and I'm up to a couple of dollars, so I'm not exactly
hoping to get rich off this! I'm doing it for the experience,
and because I love writing!

I've got two columns going - one for my poetry, and one
for Australiana. I'm also posting separate articles about
writing/SF/etc. I've posted two of them - one on Anne
McCaffrey, one leading on from that on James White, Anne
McCaffrey and ongoing series writing.

If you want to read any of these you can subscribe to
me on themestream, or simply go to the url and do a search for
my name, or click on one of my articles and then say 'see more
by me'

Here's the URLs for my first few items.

NEW FANS

Anne and Richard Spurling announced the birth of their
daughter on February 21st " Her name is Lauren, she is 7 lb and
absolutely gorgeous. Both mother and baby are doing very well.
Lauren already has her first quill and will begin touch typing
courses next week."

PERIPATETIC FANS

Juliette Woods reports "Damien [Warman] and I now have
a firm idea of where we're going once I've finished my thesis.
From July we'll be in Austin, Texas. I have a postdoctoral
appointment at the Texas Institute for Computational and
Applied Mathematics at the University of Texas.Damien will be
able to complete his PhD and do a bit of TA work there. We'll
be there for at least a year, depending on whether I get an
Australian fellowship or not. We will try and arrange to drop
by and visit people in Europe and the UK en route."

HITCHING FANS

Alan Stewart reports that Derek Watson is getting
married on April 21st.

AUSTRALIAN WORLDCON BID

Rose Mitchell reports "More on the nefarious 2007 or 9 worldcon
bid: Most of the Aussie fannish community has heard of agroup
of people, some of whom live in Melbourne, who are working on a
proposal to bid for a worldcon to be held somewhere in
Australia in either 2007 or 2009. Why these particular years?
Mainly because: as odd yearsmost of the fan fund winners would
be travelling TO Australia to attend a con here and these
yearsare in the window of within ten years of the last worldcon
held in Australia (Aussiecon Three). They and nearly anyone
else in the unpaid smoffing business, consider this to be the
optimal timeframe to run a successful worldcon off the North
American continent. This way,the expertise from the last
worldcon will not be lost and at the same time, bring in new
people with newer ideas.

Well it's a theory, and most of the people who worked on
Aussiecon Three came out ofit relatively unscathed so the group
wants to capitalise on their positive experiences -- "don't
let the buggers get away", as one wit commented! The choice of
which year to bid for hinges on the fundamental principle
thatany worldcon not held on theNorth American continent will
havelimited resources such as funds, expertise and willing and
competent personnel to staff both the bid and the con if the
bid prevails. Therefore, these precious resources must be used
with efficacy and efficiency; to put it crudely "they can't be
squandered on half-arsed bids". It is also extremely important
to get strong support >from the Americans and the Canadians.
Bids for the 2007 worldcon are to be considered and voted on
at the 2004 Worldcon -- there is a three year lead up to a
worldcon. This fact, and the 'No Zone Clause' in the WSFS
Constitition has lead to some lively discussions on the SMOFs
list recently, mainly around the validity of groups staking
out particular years that they intend to bid for.So far, there
is a declared bid for Japan (no city yet) in 2007.It is
strongly supported by Americans and Canadians and a delegation
from this bid attended Chicon last September where they created
a great deal of interest and excitement. However, some people
believe the bid may founder before 2004.A shame if it does
because a worldcon in Japan, though comparatively expensive,
nonetheless would be extremely exciting and interesting.More
info on the Nipponese bid at www.nippon2007.org So this group
of people have decided to defer further planning of a bid to
hold a worldcon in Australia until after Philcon (in August
2001). Hopefully, things will have shaken out by then and a
decision not only on which year to run for but also which city
to hold the worldcon in, can be made.

A Few Clarifying Points:

1. It was never ever the intention of the above group of people
to hold this possible convention in Melbourne. This is a
misconception that keeps being perpetuated.

2. There is also a bid for a worldcon to be held in Australia
in 2008 originating out of Sydney. As I understand this bid,
the intent is to stage the worldcon in Sydney.Perhaps the
Futurians may be able to shed some light on this.

3. Melbourne has staged all of the Aussiecons because at the
time of bidding, that city had (a) an appropriate venue to
accommodate the numbers and (b) an active fandom and (c) was
not as expensive as Sydney! Just had to throw in some
intercity rivalry.

4. All Australian cities now have (or will have within two
years) purpose-built convention centres and connecting
international flights daily. Perth has recently broken ground
for its convention centre, and it has one of the most active
fandoms in Australia today. I rather fancy Adelaide for the
next Aussie worldcon. Fantastic convention facilities which
have recently been upgraded and refurbished and most
importantly, an active fandom and close to the Clare and
McLarren Vale wine country- not that that is a consideration at
all. Another member of 'this group' is rather supportive of
the Brisbane Convention Centre -- ideal site, excellent hotel
facilities but alas, no local active fandom per se, something
that I've heard the erstwhile editor of this newszine lament
about on several occasions."

LETTERATURE

Derek Screen passed on the following comments on notes
I made on Multiverse in the BS 162
"'Multiverse rates are now available. They have dropped into
that habit of referring to "tickets" rather than "memberships".
The Banquet and Trivia Night cost extra. There is no mention of
children's rates.' Firstly, as far as we are concerned and it
is reflected on our membership cards and in our paperwork - all
people to come to our events are attendees and we class them as
members to the convention. The reason we have called them
tickets is twofold - 1) because that's what they are -
membership tickets and 2) we wanted to make sure that
everything was easy for people. We have changed our web address
and email address as they are easier to remember and as part of
that we were given 3 email addresses to use. As one is the
general all purpose multi...@multiverse.org.au and another
one is in...@multiverse.org.au for those needing specific
answers we had to be careful with the 3rd address and chose
tic...@multiverse.org.au as this reflects that it will be used
for movie tickets, con tickets, event tickets, raffle tickets
etc. I think this is logical.
In regards to children's tickets, yes we have specifically left
this off the initial form for the con for two reasons. firstly,
we have always in the past and will continue to do so, allow
the registration people to use their initiative when selling
children and family tickets. If Qantas or the venue or
Australia Post gave us discounts for children, we would
instantly reflect this in the ticket prices with a child
specific price, but since they don't, we can't really set a
kids' rate as no matter what we do, we get ribbed for it. We
have done this in the past and it has caused considerable angst
for the rego people. Instead, if people are interested in
family or children tickets, Sharon will discuss this with the
family concerned and come up with an agreed amount. We feel
this is far fairer than turning people away at the door for
want of $5 or $10. If you are interested in bringing along your
family, please feel free to ask Sharon for a price. We want to
get as much money from members as we can to pay the bills, but
we want to do it as family and as affordably as we can for the
members too. In the second A5 flyer when it goes out we will
have updated pricing and include the line "for children and
family ticket prices please contact Multiverse" I think by the
time this comes out, people will have an idea in their heads as
to whether they are interested in attending or not and will
probably think they should know the child/family prices by then
to see if they can afford it or not. I hope they can."
