APOLOGY

My apologies to Grant Watson for any bad feeling caused by my
printing of the Rogers Street Door Letter in the previous issue
of the Bullsheet. It seemed funny at the time and I didn't stop
to think through the consequences of printing it.

IN PRINT

Murray MacLachlan notes "Sara Douglass has a short story
in the Australian Women's Weekly June 2001. "St Uncumber" is a
routine fantasy story set in medieval London, where a religious
icon assists downtrodden women. The accompanying "About the
Author" sidebar lists one of my favourite author occupations,
"playing the stock market.""
Simon Haynes notes on the Eidolist "I'm printing a short run of
Hal Spacejock as a perfect-bound paperback. It'll be about
275pp. I've put an order form on my page at
http://www.spacejock.com. I'm still chasing up a firm quote from
overseas, but since it would involve a print run of at least 2000
books I've decided to test the waters first."

SMALL PRESS ALLIANCE

Robbie Matthews writes "I am proposing starting up Camrin
Press, a company for these purposes: We would take and store
copies of your books, put out a regular newsletter/catalogue to
the various bookshops around the place, arrange for on-line
ordering and probably even manage the annoying problems of GST &
ABN no's for those who are not set up to handle it themselves. We
would charge a flat 10% of RRP + freight costs for the privilege.
Is anyone interested in doing business on that basis? I have to
say that our actual distribution network will be very small at
first, notably the specialist bookshops, but we would hope to
expand it once we get properly on our feet. Having a fair-sized
catalogue should assist with the actual marketing effort as well"

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH

Lucy Sussex notes "I've been syndicated - the Covernotes column
which I write for the Sunday Age with Mike Shuttleworth has been
picked up by the West Australian. They basically run as many of
our 9 short reviews a week as they want or have space for." Colin
Steele has further reviews in The Canberra Times 22/4/2001 and
26/5/2001, including a review of the Canberra Speculative Fiction
Guild's Nor of Human. Who Weekly 25/6/2001 has a two page
article on Cecilia Dart-Thornton and her The Ill-Made Mute.
I received the following message "My name is Jane Rickards. I am
a writer for the Age. I'm keen to talk to Melburnians who are
Tolkien fans and also very excited about the Lord of the Rings
film coming out. I want to know what kind of websites they get on
to on the internet, what they expect from the film and so on. It
would be great if you know anyone who could help me or who is
really excited about the film. Or if you know of any specific fan
clubs in Melbourne for Lord of the Rings. My mobile number is
0402 420 594."

FAN FUNDS

Irwin Hirsh passes on the following note from Jean Weber "I've
posted several sections of the first draft (or second draft, but
definitely not final) GUFF report on Eric's website, starting at
http://psiphi.server101.com/guff/trip1.htm"

PERIPATETIC FANS

David Russell notes that Les Robertson was released from
prison on May 22nd and is back with his parents in Moe. Les can
be contacted at 12 Coalville Rd Moe 3825.

ANTIFAN FILMS

Mark Loney reports " ScreenSound Australia have let me
know that they expect the video copies of the AntiFan films to be
available in the first half of July.
With the help of Jack Herman and Yvonne Rousseau (who
produced the Foyster Festschrift Timeline), I have also come up
with the following information about production dates for the
AntiFan films. As you will note , we have a much better fix on
the eighties AntiFan than the seventies AntiFan.
The first Anti-Fan film was made to promote the Australia in 1975
bid for the World Science Fiction Convention (the actual
convention in 1975 was called Aussiecon). In the seventies,
Worldcon locations were voted for two years in advance of the
convention. So the first film could not have been made any later
than August 1973 (when the site selection vote was held). The
bid was not officially launched until January 1971 so the window
for production for the first AntiFan film is sometime in
1971-1973. (Irwin Hirsh added that, according to Lesleigh
Luttrell's DUFF report, the film was premiered at Syncon in
1972.)
The second Anti-Fan film was made to promote a bid for a
Worldcon in Australia in 1983. That bid was unsuccessful but a
later bid for 1985 was successful (the actual convention in 1985
was called Aussiecon Two). Again, at that time, Worldcon
locations were selected two years in advance. The film was made
in and around Sydney in early to mid 1980. The planning was done
at the 1980 Melbourne Eastercon, the filming in May or June and
the film was shown at the Syncon, in August 1980."

I didn't make it clear enough in my eFNAC email that people
should write to ME for the password to retrieve eFNAC. This
allows me to know who is reading it but more importantly lets me
mail advice about when the next issue has been posted. This
approach has already produced results - Alan Sandercock has been
a furtive reader but has now sent me a long email bringing me up
to date on what he has been doing. So Erika has changed the
password from that you published in BULLSHEET." Bean and Medge

TOLKIEN 2005

"Tolkien 2005 -- The Ring Goes Ever On Celebrating 50 years of
The Lord of the Rings
A conference to celebrate 50 years of The Lord of the Rings
organised by The Tolkien Society is to be held in August 2005. We
wish to involve as many of the other Tolkien Societies of the
world as are interested. The conference will be held between the
11th and the 15th of August in Birmingham, England, the town
where Tolkien spent most of his childhood. The venue will be
Aston University. It is timed so as to start a few days after
the end (the 8th) of the proposed Glasgow Worldcon (there are
currently no other Worldcon bids for 2005). We are currently
planning for around 300 delegates."

BROAD UNIVERSE KICKS OFF

Amy Hanson notes "Broad Universe got off to a grand start
with a kick-off panel and party at Wiscon, the feminist sf/f
convention in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. The festivities marked
the growth of a good idea last year into a real organization that
will promote the writing and artwork of women within science
fiction, fantasy, and horror. An international companion group
to Sisters in Crime and Women Writing the West, Broad Universe is
located at www.BroadUniverse.org and has an online newsletter,
book catalog, listserv, FAQ, statistics page, links, and other
great features.

The celebration party at Wiscon soon grew to
standing-room only, and was attended by both guests of honor,
Nancy Kress and Elizabeth Vonarburg. Molly Gloss donated a cake
frosted with a replica of her book cover that she'd been given as
part of the Tiptree Award -- the first time many in the crowd had
ever eaten an award. The audience at the Broad Universe panel
earlier in the day had spontaneously passed the hat, netting $US
101 -- an auspicious number, as the group had been proposed the
year before at a panel entitled "World Domination 101.""

CONJOSE ANNOUNCES EVENTS VENUE

ConJose, the 2002 Worldcon, has announced that it will be
using San Jose's Civic Auditorium for its major evening events,
including (but not necessarily limited to) the Hugo Awards
Ceremony and Masquerade. The Civic Auditorium is a charming venue
built in the classic Mission style. Zorro costumes would be
entirely appropriate.

FIRST CORDWAINER SMITH REDISCOVERY AWARD TO BE PRESENTED ON SEPTEMBER 2 AT
PHILCON

The first annual Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award will be
presented on Sunday, September 2, 2001, at the 59th World
Science Fiction Convention, "Philcon," in Philadelphia, PA.
Noted science fiction author Robert Silverberg will be presenting
the Award on behalf of the Cordwainer Smith Awards Committee and
the Cordwainer Smith Foundation. "The Cordwainer," as the award
has been nicknamed, will go to to a science fiction or fantasy
writer whose work displays unusual originality, embodies the
spirit of Cordwainer Smith's fiction, and deserves renewed
attention or 'Rediscovery.' The prize is an engraved crystal
tetrahedron which can be seen at www.cordwainersmith.com/pr.htm.
Jurors for this year's Award are four of the most distinguished
and encyclopedic minds in contemporary science fiction, all Hugo
winners themselves: Robert Silverberg, Gardner Dozois, John
Clute, and Scott Edelman. They were free to choose any writer,
living or dead, for the Award.
