Sun, Sea, Sand.. And Cops
23, February 2002

Police at Manly will be catching crooks rather than waves when they take to
the beach in a new 4WD.
A soft top Suzuki Jimny is being trialled by the Local Area Command as part
of efforts to clamp down on crime in beach areas.

The new vehicle will be used to increase the visible police presence around
the Manly CBD, beach and Corso areas.

Manly Local Area Commander Superintendent Steve Cullen said the Jimny was
ideal for beach policing.

"It is capable of carrying two officers, as well as a range of lifesaving
and rescue equipment. It's also particularly quiet and very light, so it
doesn't leave huge wheel marks in the sand," Supt Cullen said.

"We want the vehicle to present a friendly and approachable image to the
public, while also acting as a deterrent to crime in and around the beaches.

"The aim is for it to have a high profile during its 10-day trial, and we
will be gauging the reaction of members of the public."

Supt Cullen emphasised the Jimny would not be a first response vehicle and
urgent duties would be carried out by existing Highway Patrol and general
duties vehicles.

The Jimny was provided for trial by Suzuki at the request of an inter-agency
committee, made up of a number of government agencies including NSW Police
and the RTA. The committee was established to investigate issues relating to
All Terrain Vehicles, which were withdrawn from police use because they were
not suitable for on-road purposes.

After its 10 days in Manly, the Jimny will be trialled at two locations in
the Eastern and Southern beaches.

Editor's note: Filming/photo opportunities of officers at work in the Jimny
at Manly can be arranged through the Police Media Unit.

Manly Police Hit The Beach For The Kids
23, February 2002
They're buffed, they're toned and they're going to send the Manly surf
lifesavers packing with the help of Sydney Olympic gold medallists Kerry Pot
tharst and Natalie Cook and Formula One drivers Eddie Irvine and Pedro De La
Rosa. Who are they? The Manly Police Beach Volleyball team.

The sand will start flying from 10.30am on Wednesday 27 February at North
Steyne, Manly Beach and the event is being staged as a novel warm up for
Eddie and Pedro as they prepare for the Australian F1 Grand Prix.

Event organisers have offered a $5000 purse to the winners and should the
Manly Police side be victorious, the Bear Cottage Hospice for children with
cancer would be the recipients. The police and lifesaver teams will be
assisted by one of the gold medallists and a Formula One driver each.

Manly-Davidson Crime Manager and team coach, Detective Inspector Luke
Freudenstein said he had been able to select a competitive team from the
many volunteers at the station.

"There is a real blend of youth and experience on the side and our greatest
asset is definitely everyone's tenacity. The lifesavers' could well be
surprised at our scintillating form ," Det Insp Freudenstein said.

"We're doing this for the kids at Bear Cottage who, no matter what comes our
way as police officers, are having a far tougher run in life than we ever
will."
