"Australian military personnel should carefully consider wearing their
uniforms in public, the Defence Department says"

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-09-25/uniformed-adf-officer-attacked-by-men-in-sydney-nsw-police-say/5769874

This is a disgrace!

The PM quite specifically said that people should go about their daily
business and *not* change their lives.

Is the Dept of Defence saying that *Australian* soldiers *in*
*Australia* should not wear uniform?

RIDICULOUS!

Whoever issued this utterly *absurd* *ambiguous* guideline (or whatever
it is) doesn't belong in the defence force.

That whole story sounds dodgy. The guy says he was assaulted first thing in the
morning in some Northern Sydney suburb (I can't remember which) and reported it
in the afternoon, in Kings Cross. Why wouldn't he go back in his house and
report it from there? Why wouldn't he go to his local police station and report
it there? Why wouldn't he go to his defence establishment and report it there?

It's got bullshit written all over it.

You've got point.

It's fairly standard to issue guidelines like this. In 2002, when I was in the RAAF, we were told
the same thing.

When the security level goes up things like this start to happen. It's nothing unexpected.

It is ambiguous, serves no purpose and it smells of PC risk-aversion. As
such it creates uncertainty and will probably have unintended consequences.

Secondly, it is pathetic. Defence personnel should wear a uniform when &
when they want to, *anywhere* in Australia.

Third, it is contrary to the the PM's leadership: "Australians should go
about their business", "Don't let terrorism rattle you".

Fourth, current tactics should be a strong, friendly *presence*
*everywhere*. Not cringing away from wearing a bloody uniform!

Whoever issued that statement is so hopelessly out of touch that they
should be fired. It is 180 degrees out of phase with what is required.

You're welcome to your opinions. Of course:

"Opinions are like arseholes. Everybody's got one and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks."

I guess you would be surprised to learn that ADF members in uniform are hassled by the general
Australian public, even when times are good? It's a fact. Your opinions don't change this.

Rubbish.
1. People do respect others' opinions
2. Facts do change opinions and opinions change events (facts).

Your claim "that ADF members in uniform are hassled by the general
Australian public" is vague & general & means nothing without specific
facts or statistics.

If it is true, i.e. you can provide some measurable indicator, then it
is *more* reason to wear uniforms at every opportunity.

What has become of the ADF? Are they Ninnies and Bullies or men and
women who will defend Australia - with force if necessary?

Sydney's north-west has withdrawn the allegation."
