MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR THE LATE CANON LANCE SHILTON
FORMER DEAN OF ST ANDREW'S CATHEDRAL, SYDNEY

A Memorial Service in honour of the Rev Canon Lancelot Rupert
(Lance) Shilton will be held in St Andrew's Cathedral, George Street,
Sydney at 11.15am on Tuesday 17 March. The Memorial Service will
follow a private family funeral service which will be held earlier
that morning. Canon Shilton passed away at 11.00 pm, Thursday, 12
March, 1998, following a long battle with cancer.

The Dean of Sydney, the Very Rev Boak Jobbins will lead the Memorial
Service and the preacher will be the Most Rev. Marcus Loane, former
Archbishop of Sydney. Archbishop Harry Goodhew and Bishop Donald
Robinson will also be present at the Memorial Service.

Canon Shilton was well known for his media comments during his time
as Dean of Sydney. He was reported widely throughout Australia. He
appeared regularly on radio and TV making public comment, even up
until recent years

Lance Shilton came to Sydney as Dean after serving in both Melbourne
and Adelaide Dioceses. He was a graduate of Melbourne University in
Arts and London University in Divinity. He trained for ministry at
Ridley College, Melbourne and was ordained in 1949. He was in the
Army during World War II.

When he was Rector of St Jude's Carlton that inner city church began
to grow and was full of activity. He was appointed Rector of Holy
Trinity, Adelaide in 1957 and during his term as Rector it became
necessary to add galleries in the church to accommodate the large
numbers who joined his congregations. He was appointed Dean of
Sydney in 1973 and remained in that position until his retirement in
l989.

He was always involved in movements to resist permissive behaviour
or legislation. In Adelaide he was heavily involved in the public and
legal fight against the staging in that city of the revue "Oh
Calcutta!" and he was editor of a book that told the story later, "No
No Calcutta!"

While Dean of Sydney Canon Shilton conducted a `Friday Forum' in
Sydney Square where he answered questions from the public. Usually
there were at least 200 people gathered in Sydney Square on a Friday.
He was also very supportive of the work of the Church Missionary
Society, and after a visit to China with his first wife Joan he
maintained a lively interest that country and its people. Joan
Shilton passed away in 1980.

In l997 his autobiography "Speaking Out" was awarded Religious Book
of the Year.

Canon Shilton is survived by his second wife May and two daughters,
Pauline and Andrea, and ten grandchildren.
