The details of the SRA's diesel locomotive auction on December 6th at Cardiff
workshops have been finalised. I received a letter from the appointed
auctioneers (MGS Turner Auctions) the same day that the latest copy of
'Network' (in which MGS are advertising the auction) hit my mailbox.

Here's the info........

120 LOCOMOTIVES and SPARE PARTS

under instructions from the State Rail Authority of NSW

om the site of

CARDIFF MAINTENANCE WORKSHOP, MAIN RD, GLENDALE, NEWCASTLE, NSW

11 AM, TUESDAY 6TH DECEMBER

To be auctioned are.....

- 14 x 442 class diesel electric locomotives (2000 HP, max. load 610 tonnes at
19 kph on 1:40 grade, max. speed 115 kph, Alco 251 V12 engine),

- 28 x 48 class diesel electric locomotives (950 HP, max. load 457 tonnes at
13 kph on 1:40 grade, max. speed 100 kph, Alco 251 inline-6 engine),

- 37 x 45 class diesel electric locomotives (1800 HP, max. load 650 tonnes
at 17.7 kph on 1:40 grade, max. speed 115 kph, Alco 251 V12 engine),
some of this group have been converted to single control stand units,

- 48 x 44 class diesel electric locomotives (1800 HP, max. load 610 tonnes
at 19 kph on 1:40 grade, max. speed 115 kph, Alco 251 V12 engine),

- 1 x 47 class diesel electric locomotive (1000 HP, max. load 497 tonnes at
13 kph on 1:40 grade, max. speed 115 kph, Caterpillar V16 engine),

- 10 assorted 46 class electric locomotives, 47 and 442 class diesel
electric locomotives suitable as a source of spare parts only.

- various lots of spare parts.

A full report is available for each of the locomotives being sold as
potential operating units.

Inspection is by appointment only with the auctioneers. Catalogues are
available on request (A$20).

For further information contact Tim O'Mara on (02)669-2622 (intl.
+612-669-2622), of fax MGS on (02)667-4839 (intl. +612-667-4839).

Notes:

- The advertisement is incorrect on a number of points:

- The 48 class locomotives have a maximum speed of only 100 kph, not
120 kph as listed,

- All other groups of potential operating units have a maximum speed
of only 115 kph, not 120 kph as listed (although this difference
is rather trivial!),

- The maximum loads quoted are on a rising grade of 1:40, which is
by no means the maximum load that can be hauled under any condition.

Regards,

Craig.
