Just this weekend, I rode the White Pass & Yukon twice.
For the unwashed, that's one of the world's most famous narrow gauge
railroads.

So I suppose all the random urine drug tests and the regular breath analyses
tests performed on the current rail workforce doesn't happen? It's just a
figment of there imaginations perhaps? Not to mention the people who have
left the industry or were dismissed in the past for not meeting currant
standards. I would say the rail industry is cleaner now than it's ever been
in the past. It's a pity the trucking industry can't match the rail industry
standards. Then perhaps we would all be safer on the roads.

have realised that these tests were introduced to rail workers after a
long line of derailments and train crashes where people were killed in
some cases where it was found that the train driver was either drunk
or high as a kite on drugs. Some of the instances were listed in the
other posts of mine if you care to take a rail history lesson. This
was in NSW. Of course the rail industry would have to be cleaner than
it used to because they were getting away with being at worked pissed
or under the influence of drugs and in charge of passenger and goods
trains. But the fact remains that the message is still to get through
as there is a constant line up of rail workers including drivers who
are testing positive to alcohol and drugs in their systems. The road
transport industry has had random alcohol testing long before rail
ever did and was the first to have zero alcohol ( .02% ) limits, to
those involved in driving heavy vehicles. Roadside drug testing is
whether being tested or currently introduced in at least Victoria. The
only reason it isn't widely used YET is they are trying to come up
with an accurate mouth swab method. When a suitable system is found,
this type of test method will be widely used and on other road users
as well, and by the rail industry to replace urine tests which are not
suitable for roadside testing. As for the road industry, it is by far
much "cleaner" than it has ever been. Unlike train drivers, truck
driver were never renowned to be drunk at the controls. Drugs however
were what they were renowned to be famous for. Over the last 10 years
or so, the chain of responsibility has extended beyond the truck
driver and has now reached as far as your prime contractor ( Your
Woolworths, Coles, type companies etc. ) Company directors are now
liable if they are placing unfair shedules on truck drivers. In the
past a driver was told we don't want you to do anything illegal but we
want you there overnight and in record time otherwise you will be
fined and or sacked. Safety Cam cameras can now detect average speeds
for a section on the highway. The road industry is now the safest it
has ever been and like the rail industry, there is still room for
improvement. In the road industry there are professional operators who
take their responsibilities seriously and are always annoyed with the
uninformed comments from the pro rail lobby who should be the last
ones to be throwing stones while ever they live in their glass houses.

It still happens. If the number drug and alcohol tests of train
drivers was routine rather than random a lot more would be out of a
job!
