The following report appeared in "The West Australian" on Sat. Feb
10th:
The report of an inquiry into last month's rail crash in which two
people were killed will not be made public at this stage.
The report has been sent to Northam coroner Frank Cullen, who will
decide whether to hold an inquest
Westrail and the National Rail Corporation say it is up to Mr
Cullen to release the report. But there is no guarantee this will
happen.
""There's no effort on our part to keep the report secret but it
is not appropriate to release it now and preempt the coroner's
findings," Westrail spokeswoman Kaye Verboon said.
NRC corporate affairs general manager Fred Affleck appealed for
patience but conceded that the report might not be made public.
"The coroner wants to handle it this way and it ensures all the
evidence will be carefully considered," Dr Affleck said.
Safety Bay schoolboy Bobby-Lee Brooks, 11, and Boulder train
driver Wayne Monck,31, were killed in the crash at Hines Hill
railway siding, 240kms east of Perth early on January 14.
Bobby-Lee was a close friend of one of Mr Monck's three children.
A four-man board of inquiry investingating the crash, in which a
Perth-bound National Rail Corporation goods train ploughed into
a Westrail train hauling fuel wagons.
It took several hours to control the ensuing fire and damage to the
trains and track was estimated at $10 million.
The board of inquiry was chaired by Les Brearly, safe-working
manager for Queensland Railways assisted by representatives of
Westrail and the NRC and Commonwealth and Sate occupational health
groups.
The board took two weeks to make its report.
The coroner's investigation is continuing and could take several
more months."
