The oldest VP185 engine isn't even 4 years old yet! They must be
flogging the poor things to death for them to come up for major overhaul
in under 4 years.

XPTs are flogged to death. They boast one of the highest fleet
utilizations in the world. I seem to recall them saying only the French
TGV fleet did better.
An XPT set only spends a couple of hours a week at Meeks Rd. The rest of
the time they are 'on the road'. I don't know how many back to back runs a
set does before they pull it and do more than a 'pit stop' inspection on
it. I was told ages ago, but have forgotten.
They push em hard.
3-4 years sounds about right for a hard-worked diesel engine to be rebuilt.

How fast was it going?

Shouldn't it be called a "near hit"?

I know most of the IS125 UK sets are to recieve or have/already have the
VP185 engine.
Also, this engine has been proposed as the engine to be put into the so
called HST2 train but at a higher power rating.
With the XPT's, whats the failure rate like due to an engine dying rather
than associated equipment like electrics and transmisions to the amount of
kilometers it has travelled?
Chris
Not very fast, I seen two ARG units on it at Lithgow Up Yard

On all the XPT's I've had dealings with it's the Traction motors that fail,
not the diesel engines.

they could and should do for themselves.

Looking through the tender document in detail, it's the 24,000 hour
major overhaul. Going 24,000 hours between overhauls is pretty good by
any standards. The engines in the Navy's Fremantle class patrol boats
only go 9,000 hours between major overhauls. Aircraft engines
typically only go 1,500-2,000 hours.
24,000 hours in 4 years is an average of 16 hours per day. Running
them for long periods actually lengthens their lives. I have heard
quoted the figure of 10 hours taken off the life of a diesel engine
for each cold start.
Cheers
