Can someone please tell me what the plus signs (+) denote on the buffer
beams of a NSW loco. There are two on an AD.60 Garratt which are mounted
one over the other following the loco number. A photo of D.5191 shows the
front buffer beam with the number next to the right buffer & the plus (+)
next to the left buffer as does a photo of C.3405

Errr ummmm...isn't it that they were modified for dual control for reverse
operation on branch lines where they couldn't be turned.

The "DC" on a Garratt indicated dual control, and the "++" indicated
enlarged cylinders. The single + on the buffer beam of other classes
indicated superheating.
