Can't listen to analogue phones or the police any more... Usenet is
slowly dying... but yes, the group is still here :)
This ng used to be a hive of activity but is slowly going the way of the
dodo bird.
Oh and hello to all the spambots out there :P

Yep, things change... although not always for the better. Hate to see
usenet cark it, hopefully it'll still be around in usable form for a
few more years yet.
I'll second that. I've been into computer comms for over 20 years.
Usenet is definatly dying and for several reasons, inc facebook, twitter
et al, anon mail accounts like gmail, the ability to crosspost into more
than 3 groups... usenet was awesome when i started, now, you have the
likes of david zyk and dave canole who thought they can say anything
they like and get away with it, hiding behind anonnimity(sp?)
just trying to fuck it up for everyone else.
Sort of back on OT, does anyone know if the 5 watt/16 channel hand helds
sold on ebay are any good for 5 kms in fairly rough terrain?
or even
tia.
Re Police, not actually true, depening on where you live. And there's quite
a bit of action on GRN too! And also some pagers (PDW)...

Yes true, but I just accept that as part of being on a fully
unmoderated medium (ignoring moderated newsgroups, which is an
abomination IMO :) ). Can't have it both ways, and all that.

Yeah, I'm in Tas and they use a trunking network here, alas I am way
out of range of that, being in remote NE Tassie. I'm guessing they
must use some VHF freqs for these mountainous areas, but haven't
gotten a good look at the 4WDs the coppers use here to see what
antennas they have...
As for the old analgue cordless phones, well I have no hope of
listening to those here, even if I wanted to... no neighbours for
miles. That said, I have set my pcr 1500 to scan and record around
30MHz and occaisonally pick up some Asian comms, always very brief.
I'd like to find out what exactly that is some day...

Indeed!

5km is a tough ask for rough terrain and UHF between handheld radios - VHF
would be better. Some of the manufacturers range claims assume a good path-
though if it's really good you'll do a lot better - eg 20 - 100km.
Or a small UHF beam that plugs into the antenna socket (if there is one) but
that's bulky to carry unless it pulls apart.
They probably use HF radios like Codans. They do here in country areas of
NSW. The ACMA database will probably be a fruitful source of info.
Re 'not much on scanners' I am astounded at the number of analogue scanners
advertised on eBay Australia as 'Police' scanners when they are no such
thing. Also, I recently bid for a Bearcat 300, an old analogue scanner that
would hear virtually nothing these days (I needed it for a one-off single
channel application on around 147 MHz). It was bid up to a ridiculous $100+!
...not be me I hasten to add. Buggy site that eBay, too...
Either a trader or an ignorant hopeful who being disappointed will sell it
on to some other sucker!
.

I'll be yacking between a 5 watt car uhf cb, using a whip antenna on a
magnetic base, and one of these...
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/370475986302?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
$78.50 for radio, earpiece, program cable/software, car charger and spare
battery.
If it's no good, well, I've lost bugger all...

Nice :)

Yeah, I had a look around a couple of years ago on the AMCA site but
came up empty handed. I'm still thinking VHF, it works really well in
the NE Tas terrain, a few 2m repeaters here have excellent coverage
around the state.

I never ceases to amuse me when they are described as such :)

Probably just ignorant. All one has to do on eBay is search for
completed auctions with the same or similar item to get a fair
indication of value... but that is beyond some people I guess.
