Poc32 and PDW using com port under XP

Recently I built myself a couple of 2 level and 4 level FSK decoders, and
more recently upgraded my computer and started using Windows XP Pro. With my
computer in its old configuration, using Windows Me both the interfaces ran
faultlessly using both Poc32 and PDW. Now, since the upgrade I have been
unable to get either program running using either com port. I get the error
message "Unable to load comport.vxd" when starting PDW, and under Poc32 the
com port box is shaded in Options- Pocsag- Properties. I have visited the
relevant websites, and although I cannot recall exactly what it says on
either site, It basically says the programs will suffer this problem under
XP. The programs work using the sound card, and I know this may seem like
the easy way to solve the problem, by simply using the sound card, but I use
my line in, aux in and mic in for other purposes, and there is also the
issue of my new decoders gathering dust now. Has anybody managed to get
around this problem, and get these programs to accept/initialise the com
ports under XP, or can anybody suggest any other software that will allow me
to decode pocsag messages under XP using the com port?

TIA
Adam

I take it you never tried to read the PDW instructions then, because
it clearly states that it doesn't support serial connection under XP.
Looks like you'll have to go back to ME

They've obviously done their own Active-X control and it isn't XP
conformant. That's not going to be easy to get around.

Even simpler than that, VXD device drivers are no longer supported in XP....

A very simple way to fix the problem - get hold of an older computer
that doesn't run XP. I am in the process of putting together an old 486
that will be running on 3.1 purely for the use with radios. I
originally picked this motherboard and chip because of problems said to
be experienced with faster computers when usi g them to program radios.
I am now thinking of a second computer around a PII 300 for use with
PSK31 and similar as they apparently need a bit more balls to properly
run the software.

I use a Pentium 100 machine networked with the main one
the pentium sits there 24/7 decoding whatever I set it up to do
it didn't even have a monitor for a while as I could see all I needed on
the main computer, it is setup so that if there was a power failure it
would start up the network program and the decoder and keep going, the
decoder is set to save every 3 mins

Hi Kev - what are you mainly aiming at with your decoding? I seem to
recall that you were playing around with pagers for a while, but
wondering if you have been playing with PSK31 yet? I have a couple of
good bookmarks for freeby software, but have yet to download any, nor
construct any of the interfaces that seem to be needed - although this
seems to be more fore the TX than receiving PSK - and I need to upgrade
my licence before there is any real need to worry about the TX side of
things.

You take it quite wrong as a matter of fact, I had read all documentation
available for both programs. I had already pretty much given up on the idea
of getting the programs running using the com ports about 8 weeks ago, and
the interfaces have been gathering dust since. I have heard of stranger
things happening though, and thought as a last resort I would ask the
question here, just in case somebody "did" have an answer/solution
basically. I'm really kicking myself that I gave my old computer parts away
now, but that's life... I may set up a dual boot with XP and Win2k or gather
parts and put a junker computer together for tasks such as this. Anyway
thanks all for your input.

Nah sorry, wrong Kev, but having said that, would appreciate any advice
on the subject. Unable to get onto BMARC as I am currently in
Melbourne - don't think I can get BMAC from VK1 unless I go mountain
hopping with the directional toy.

There is a program called Port95nt that may help you here. I can remember
where I got it from now, but I may still have the links. I'm out of town for
a few days, so when I get back I'll check it out for you. I used it for an
LCD mod on a PC, but it gives you access to serial and parallel hardware on
NT (NT4, Win2k and XP) based systems. If you don't want to wait, try firing
up google ( www.google.com.au) and having a look there.

Cheers
Chris
