So I went 80 channel. Or is that 77 channel? Or is it 75 channel?
Bought a brand new Uniden UH7700NB off the web for less than $200 including
post.
Impressions so far. Likable radio. Very small. If you cant fit this in your
car, give up trying. I'm not sure I like the up and down buttons for the
volume, but I guess I'll get used to it. The flipping display is handy. The
changing display colour and brightness is nice.
Received audio is remarkably clear even at high volume, which is great for
such a tiny speaker. Wide deviation signals sound perfect. I see GME has
selectable narrow and wide receive filters on channels 1 to 40. Uniden don't
but have some automatic thingamajig which makes narrow and wide sound the
same level. I don't know how that works, but wide signals are not chopping
like they normally would.
Only one little thing to take the shine off my new toy. I decided I would
never buy another UHF rig which didn't have a squelch control. On the 7700
you press the channel knob and it displays SQL and a number so you can set
the squelch level. It goes from off, to 1 them up to 9. Off being unmuted, 9
being squelch full on. Unfortunately position 1 is to high for me. It
requires the signal meter to be half way up to break the squelch and there
is plenty of noisy but workable signals not making it through the squelch.
So I am finding I am switching between off and position 1 all the time. It
may as well not have a squelch control.
This is on a base antenna so the "to high position 1" may be acceptable once
I put it in my ute.
If anyone finds out how to desensitise the squelch, please let me know.
But considering its the cheapest 80 channel rig out there, its a good enough
choice.
I'll try am GME TX3500 next.
