Hi

A friend has just come across a few of these radios and we are
looking for some info on them.

I assume they are UHF CB channels right ? The analogue channel selectors
go from 1 to 99 but i assume there are only 40 channels ?

Also could a normal UHF car CB antenna be attached when using in the car ?
The BNC socket on top of the radio looks pretty standard.

Any info on these radios would be appreciated, i havnt been able to find
much online cos they are so old. What sort of range can be expected wwith
the standard 6" whip antenna ?

thanks

I have the IC-40S, which you can find on the web if you search using
www.google.com
If it looks similar, that the IC-40 maybe its predecessor. I have got 60km
range into a repeater using the 6" standard antenna and the rechargable
battery.

The IC40 was one of the first UHF CB handhelds released. It was modelled
on the IC4e, a 70cm amateur unit.

Thumbwheel selectable 40ch with switchable repeater offset on ch 1-8.
High/low power switching, I think around 1.5w high/0.5w low depending on
the supply voltage. You can reprogram the EPROM for additional channels,
but as it doesn't have CTCSS, commercial use is limited.

The receiver is pretty good considering it's age. You will get
images/breakthrough if you use an external base antenna or in a high RF
environment but this is the case with most handhelds. It's not as bad as
the first FM320. :-)

You can still get battery packs for them, although you might find the
original Icom ones a little hard to find.

I have one here that I still use occasionally. The range obtainable from
one is quite suprising considering the power output.

Nick.

Thanks for the great info nick.

Just wondering about programming extra channels into one of these, i
assume you have to remove the eprom and program it with an eprom
programmer ? Where do you get suitable bin files for the extra channels ?

It would be nice to be able to have police rx on one of the unused
channels. Are the channels 41 - 99 useable on this set or are they just
there due to the use of the thumbwheels to switch channels ?

thanks

Hello Dane,
That was a common mod available to the old IC-40, I saw
several like this many years ago. Never looked into the mod because I
haven't owned one of them.

There is an additional mod to do apart from reprogramming the EPROM. I
can't remember what it is, but on the weekend I'll have a look at mine and
work it out.

Nick.
