I Think David Rymer did nights at 4BK just after Glenn Wheatley sold
it to Austereo. Guy Dobson was on as well from the old Kookaburra
Queen from expo 88 in Brisbane.

The David that someone thinks on nights at Stereo 10 was probably
David Daly.
I Think he married Jackie Ramstedt at one stage. Could be wrong. She
worked at 4SS for a while after Stereo 10. Jackie won a competition on
4IP years ago and ended up hosting an afternoon shift as part of the
competition prize then went on to her own shift.

She ended her first shift (the competion prize) with her favourite
song at that time "Precious To Me" by Phil Seymour(who died incidently
of a brain tumor a few years ago).

Also in the new 4IP days (prior to TAB) was Jon Kennedy and also
Melissa Collins.

The final 4IP day time line up as a Top 40 station in the late 1980's
was David Daly on Breakfast Jeff Creed in the mornings Mike Nichols in
the avo and Melissa & Jon fitted in some where there as well. Debbie
did traffic and Brian Lowe read the news.

Then in desperation it changed to classic hits 4IP and Ron Sawyell
took over as MD and Gray Clarke went back on in mornings following
Paul J Turner from Breakfast. Then Mark Malone (Greasley) did
Afternoons and Ron Saywell Drive till seven pm with Ian Macrae and
Nightbeat from a Satelight feed that was land lined from 4BC in Dual
mono and rebroadcast. The news by this stage was also from 4BC.

When I worked at 3AW (Macquarie National News) in the late 1960s/early 1970s
we exchanged news with the Queensland Radio News Service (QRNS). But a
difficulty arose and the arrangement lapsed. The guys from (the real) 4IP
stepped in to fill the gap. There was John O'Loan and Des (?) - both who
later went on to Channel 10? There are they now? The material from 4IP was a
lot more "racey" than we were used to at Macquarie. Billy J Smith even did a
couple of news voice reports for 3AW! There was another guy called Geoffrey
Mullins if I recall.
I remember visiting the guys at the 4IP studio in Queen Street in 1970. It
was a dynamic operation at that time.
Wonder if the current high flyers will have their day and fall from gace
like 4IP, 3XY and 2SM?
All getting a bit fuzzy now; memories...

If I recall correctly Des set up the news room to run in conjunction
with channel 0 eye witness news read by Nev Roberts when they started
a 6.30 news service.

Would 4IP still rate if it ever came back with Graham "Robbo" Roberts
or Billy J Smith in breakfast and Kevin Hiller doing the womans
session followed by Chris Lee on afternoons and Paul J Turmer on
Drive? Who should do nights and what format would pick up the
listeners that they let go when the "Real 4IP" ceased.

Would we call it the rebirth of personality radio?

Should Allan McGirvan do womans (I haven't heard that term for years)
& Kevin Hiller do Nights?
Maybe Roy Jameison should read the news.

Would a rebirth of the "Real 4IP" win alot of the 4KQ Listeners?

Should it be personality driven not just music driven?

From Byron Bay to Gympie would it work if it just happened?

Excuse my ignorance, but what does this "womans" thing mean?

I never listened to 4IP. (4KQ as selected by my parents dominated my
early childhood - then it was straight to FM and by the time I realised
it, (when Q-FM launched - Sunday 1:06 pm 6 March?) 4IP was in it's dying

Every station seemed to have a women's program in the mornings when I was a
kid. In country towns (e.g. 3SH & 2PK), they often had a women's club that
operated in conjunction with the show.

A bit like the kids' shows that came on late afternoon, when the announcer
became "Uncle" whoever.

All seems a bit quaint now.

What about Gray Clarke? He and Ray MacGregor started this company
called "Magnum Productions" at the old Bank Of New South Wales
Building in Queen Street. What ever happened to Gray and how old do
you think he would be now? He had all these little shows like "The
Way We Were" that were sold to regional radio. I did hear a show of
his with Ray doing the voice on 4GGG about 4 years ago-well after Rays
death on a program called Solid Gold At Six.

Roy-was that an old IP-er that came up with Double G changing to
Triple G?
4GG was one of the last stations that continued to use its old 1200
slogan after we all switched to the 9KHZ frequencies-1197 was it's
frequency.
The old 1010 4IP suddenly had no frequency on the logo for a while
the 1008 came along. I remember 4KQ was 700 on the wireless and some
strange frequency on the Transistor????. (Labour Party Days).

Knoxy was always there even at Warana calling the festival parade from
above his old Falcon Station Wagon.

I thought It was funny to see some body not knowing what the "Womans
Session " was- It Was big and important in the ratings. Without 4IP
and (2SM 3XY 2NX 4AY) I don't think radio would be what it is.
Remember when Chuck Leonard was let go from WABC New York-They Lost
there Teen Base. Get The Teens And you hve them for life-does that
work? ask GEOFF MULLINS at channel 10 -You would probably be
right-(History repeats)--Ha Ha another 10-(I Can Feeeel It-Ten O Eight

That being me, well, that's probably because really no one outside of
radio in Australia really gives a stuff about it, which is a great
shame. Therefore apart from sites on the 'net, (many constructed by
posters of this NG) there are no real "history books" on radio, ie
history of Brisbane/Qld/Aus radio.

Without any history books and without chatting to people who've been in
the business for a while (though I have and enjoy doing it and I think
older ones appreciate younger people's interest) - it becomes quite
difficult.

I put it here and now to challenge this "Hot Hits" person to write a
history of Brisbane radio of at least 4IP as it was revolutionary.

Any recent history ie from the 80's on - I'm pretty fine with, so I
wouldn't expect any grand scales of ignorance like me not knowing the
"Womans Session " was. Coincidentally just yesterday Peter Dick (4BC)
was reminiscing with an ex staffer onair (a lady who was a PD there and
was there for 40 yrs) about the Woman's session between 9 and midday.

There is some history books available on Brisbane Radio. I remember
seeing an A4 style black and white publication about 4 or 5 years ago.
I'll find the title for you and I think you get buy it through the
Queensland Mueseum.

Depending on what type of history you are after you can still see the
first Radio Station in Queensland's original premises any day as it is
on the corner of George & Elizabeth St in Brisbane.

You can also still walk through the original Transmitter at Bald
Hills--Yes Walk Through.

I Think a history of Brisbane Radio would be great. Last time I spoke
with Ken Sparkes he was giving me the history of how 4IP decided to
move St Helena so there is alot of people around that could contribute
and make great reading.

4BC has there history available and I think may still have there
original TOP 40 charts from decades ago in the basement- this is where
KQ got a lot of info. I could not tell you where the term "Womans
Session" was invented but it has been around for many many years. I
do think it was used outside Australia-check out the BIG KLIF.

Hi Roy. Nice to hear your voice again :-)

Yes Knoxie would be the best.

I used to like annoying him when he'd call up the studio to open the
car park doors, I'd ask 'yeah .. who's that?' As if someone at the
time couldn't recognise his voice :-)

Last time I saw him, we were in the scrub playing soldiers - he was a
Reservist I was full time Army PR then.

One point that hasn't been made was that 4IP was a regional station
that took on the big smoke and won. From memory, John continued to use
the old Ipswich studios for his Radio School??

I left just after they made Mike 'whatshisname' from Eagle Marketing
