Ones I can recall from Melbourne of the 1950s are:
3AK "Top of the Dial"
3XY "Victoria's only 24 hour [radio] station"
"Radio Melbourne" 3AW
3KZ "the brighter broadcasting service"
3DB-3LK "the Herald Sun statations"
and of course "the greater" 3UZ. I don't recall their pre "top 40" slogan?
From memory,. I think the "greater" slogan was introduced in 1958 (?) when
3UZ went "Top 40".
So if readers can't remember the "most happy fellas" [from 3KZ] they'll
probably never have heard of any/many of these?
Interesting that memories appear to be stronger for some; e.g. "Colour Radio
4IP" than others?

Top of the Dial Radio 2SM

"Hits And Memories 3KZ"
"Rock Of Ages EONFM"
"FM is FOX Music"
"DB Music", "100 3DB - Racing Radio", "100 3DB - Newsmaker Radio", "Radio

The New Beginning" which ironically was their last slogan before going to
3TT.
3AK and 2UE "The Biggest Sound In Australia!" which wasn't. Which was then
followed by "3AK Newsradio 1503" and "2UE Newsradio 954"
"3MP Bay City Radio" and "3MP The Way You Are Today" which came in before
the change to Easy Listening.

Your memory goes back further than mine! The "Nice to come home to...3 - U -

There must be more from the 50s, 60s and 70s we haven't thought of
Others that come to my mind:
Radio Sunshine - 3DB
Mellow Music - 3KZ
3MP - Bay city radio
3AW - People to people radio where news makes conversation
3AW - have a happy day (those awful songs!): who can remember the words of
the "happy day" song"? "We're looking for sunshine..."
3AK - Where no wrinklies fly
Beautiful music 3AK
Good music 2CH
87 2GB (the ill fated music experiment from the mid 1970s?)
I recall 2HD and 7LA were also "good music" for a time; any others that were
"beautiful music"? 4BH?
I think 5KA was "Konstant Music" at one stage
And of course the "noo UW" from the 1960s with signs plastered on double

1980s: 2DAY fm, In Tune with Today. Very clever tie in with callsign.
1983-85: 2SM, Rock of the 80s...cos that's exactly what it was!
1957-63: 2SM, The Family Station...cos that's exactly what it was,

1964-1966: 4IP, Color Radio, the Sound You Can See...pinched from KFWB Los

Mid 60s - mid 70s: 4KQ, Better Music...long before the Todd Wallace stations

1960s: 4BH, Top Dog Radio...they were a big deal back then with Bill Gates,

1961/62: 2UW, Good Music for Adult Minds...during their 'we play no rock 'n'

Pre 1972: 2NX, Companion Radio...the sort of thing a loser station would

1974-76: 6PR, Gentle on Your Mind. Their winning format designed by Rhett
Walker of 3AK 'No Wrinklys' fame.
1978-79: 6IX, Easy Rollin'...another big success in the West. Short lived
though.
1972-75: 2CA The Capital Station, a neat tie-in seeing they were the only
Canberra station back then: commercial that is.
Oh, and a quaint old one from the Apple Isle in the early '60s: 7HT,

Alright, alright Paul, I'll mention it. The NEWUW. OK! Triple
one-naughtable on your transistor portable...as they used to say.
Now: for those among us who cut their radio teeth on AM music radio, ten
genuine 'NooUW' trivia questions, just for fun.
1. When was the NEWUW format launched? The sixties, yes. Which year?
2. Name the PD? He was later the original GM of 3MP.
3. Can you guess the original lineup, one of whom is the father of Aust
rock star Tim Freedman.
4. When did John Laws sign on with the NEWUW? He came from 2UE where he
did drive in those days.
5. The NEWUW DJs were constantly refered to as:.... (could be two answers
here). Can you name one or both?
6. Complete this phrase: "In '68 it's just great
to -- ------ ---- --- --- ----- -- the NEWUW".
7. Name the afternoon personality lost at sea in 1967. A clue: TM in the
PM!
8. What was NEWUW's AM frequency? (Prior to 1978)
9. Which famous Australian record label/studios owned the NEWUW? (and 4BC,
2CC, 4GR, 4MB, 4RO, 3TT)
10. What was the nick name of NEWUW's top rating drive jock, Ward Austin?

XY Easy Rock...............the station you grew up with has grown up too.
But it appears that people didn't appreciate being reminded that they were
all grown up :)
Ratings at XY crashed to the floor because of that format, as well as the
speculation of a format change during the six months that preceeded it. I
think they were also outdone by newcomers Triple M and 3TT, both stations
launching impressive television advertising campaigns in late 1988.
In particular, 3TT's 'classic hits of summer' jingle helped almost double
the station's audience in one survey. So 3XY's changes made room for other
stations rather than for themselves.
> "A Great Set Of Hits" 4IP 1990
3XY also tried to go back to a hit music format after the Easy Rock format
folded, but both 3XY and 4IP were too late, overshadowed by new FM stations
like KZFM and B105.
> "Gold 1269" 2SM early 1990s
They should've stuck with it too............Gold 1269 got as high as 7
percent if memory serves me correctly. Although it's fair to say that 2CH
was trying to bid listeners back to its easy listening format at about the
same time.
The most unique format they should have stuck with was '2SM - Sydney's
Hottest Country' and the logo they used with the outline of the Sydney Opera
House. Its ratings were really not that bad. Yet the decisions to drop
country from 3UZ, 2SM and 4BC after getting little more than demo runs
demonstrates that commercial stations are too variable in their nature to
commit to a format like a narrowcasting station is more prone to doing. The
recent rebranding of Triple M in Adelaide and Brisbane demonstrates that
well.
2WS and 2SM were the first stations to be paired up under the 'two stations
per market' ownership rule, but stations do not necessarily change format
every time they change ownership - yet that has been the case at 2SM every
time it changed hands during the last decade.

I found XY was a great station to listen to during 1990-91 because it wasn't
overrun with commercials (perhaps a sad indication of the station's
fortunes) and the playlist featured a lot of new, or at least top 40, music
which the FM stations at that time were keeping away from, except after 7pm.

2SM certainly did hit 7 per cent as Gold 1269. Although the ratings soon
dived as quickly as they rose as 2CH managed to win back its lost listeners.

I think Adelaide's 5AD formed the second pair when it bought out the
ill-fated X102FM in Adelaide - converted 5AD to 102.3 and launched a new
station on its AM frequency 1323 (which later became 5DN).

Yes, that 'mix' format was already evolving on KZFM one year before TT-FM
made it their own. KZFM's slogan was for a short time 'today's music mix',
but they soon realised that reclaiming their unexpected lost ratings to 3MP
involved playing more oldies. (Interestingly, it's only been very recently
that Gold 104 has returned to the consistent high ratings run that 3KZ had
in the 1980s. In the 1990s, they were up and down like a yo-yo).
This change at KZ lead to TT-FM cutting short its subtle relaunch in late
1991, and effectively relaunching a second time in early 1992. The second
time, the changes were not so subtle.

I think its time spent in simulcast with Bay FM created the false impression
that XY had become Bay FM. I agree it was a good station then, but that
period also added salt to the wound. Once Bay FM went its own way, the
station had been completely drained of resources.

Yeah, that's the anomaly in 5DN's 80 year history :)
For five years or so, 5DN didn't exist. You simply have to put it down to
their history crossing paths with the history of 5AD. Not a first for
Adelaide either. The stations that ran Channels 7 and 10 in Adelaide until
1987 swapped frequencies that year.............probably without the viewer
noticing much change, except that the two stations swapped licences, and
therefore swapped network alignments.
Another station that reclaimed its original name was 96fm in Perth, which
was branded Triple M for five years until Austereo sold them off in favour
of what's now the 92.9/Mix 94.5 combo. 2UW and 2SM in Sydney were also
stations that for short periods tried out alternate names (2UW was Magic 11,
2SM was Gold 1269, then Kick AM) before reverting back to their original
name.
I have an opinion that Sport 927 would benefit from a name reclaim - perhaps
calling it the '3UZ Sport and Racing Network'. Their name change was simply
the wrong choice - made at the tail end of a period when changing names had
become the fashionable thing to do. 3UZ spent decades at the race track,
so there is a lot of heritage to reclaim for branding purposes. Especially
when you can do retro-branding at Carnival time. Rather than 3UZ being an
outdated name, it's actually the Sport 927 name that is outdated because the
station has since expanded into a state-wide network on multiple
frequencies.

Not that old this one but the "live on eternally, the classic hits live on
2CC" jingle stays in my head...
3XY - The Champagne of Music
Shortlived in 1985 ...
AW-AM They should have said "AW-AM-Stereo"

Good one for today though -
"STAR - One - O - Four - Five. Your NEW Local"
Interesting Response from 2GO too -
"2GO - The Local you know"
which is similarly used by 2KO - up the Freeway in Newcastle
"KO - The Local you know"
Newcastle and the Hunter Valley
