I am currently involved with getting the Australian C-Quam AM stereo
station listings up to date for the website www.amstereoradio.com .
Can any of you verify that any of the stations listed are still
transmitting in stereo? If so is it full separation? - or stereo
pilot on but no channel separation? Have we left any stations out?
If so what's their format? Should any be deleted?
thanks

1242 4AK toowoomba still runs full stereo seperation. nice station to With a

1503 2BS. They copped several mentions during 3AK's 70th
Anniversary last week. 2BS and 3AK both shared 1500 (later
1503) and due to the interference 3AK was forced to revert
to a daytime-only format (approx 7am-5pm with longer hours
during summer). Although what I'd like to know is... Frank
Packer (who bought AK in 1961) bought out 2BS to fix the
interference problem and therefore enable AK to broadcast 24
hrs, but 2BS never actually moved from 1500 (1503) and AK
never moved from there until this year. I'm no techy, so
can someone tell me that if both stations continued to share
the same frequency, how did Packer buying out 2BS fix the
problem?
Just guessing - directional antenna system?
I believe it was a condition of the licence when Packer sold the station a
year later to Ron Camplan that the station must stay directional.
Unfortunately it didn't work too well, as when I was doing breakfast at 2BS,
I used to be able to hear 3AK clear as a bell whilst driving to the 2BS
studios. The station was not 24 hours when I worked there in '75.
It was also clear in the "off-air" monitor when the transmitter was on or
off. A little quieter when it was on.
Very disconcerting reading local news on 2BS with 3AK in your head phones.
The interference in the Bathurst area would be a lot less now that 3AK has
moved. I wonder how the station sounds these days, it was bloody awful when
I was there.(and I didn't help) Even 2LT Lithgow on it's 100 watts and
rusty old mast, was a much more together station.
The John Laws show on satellite is a mono feed to all stations. The only
chance of getting it in stereo would be off 2UE, but I've seen some posts
saying they aren't stereo and some saying they are. Not owning an AM Stereo
receiver (and having no desire to) I cannot check....

Dick Smith Electronics sold these here in Aus.They took the AM signal and
decoded the stereo as either Motorola or Harris, two of the US competing
systems ,decided by a switch marked "A" or "B".They then upconverted the
resultant stereo signal to FM Multiplex which appeared at about 100MHz.You
then tuned your cars FM stereo receiver to this frequency, bingo ,instant AM
stereo. The drawback was that either position of the A B switch decoded both
systems albeit "differently".The two systems were really quite similiar and
I doubt whether or not the average listener would have ever known the
difference from listening to them.I have a vague memory that one or the
other switch positions also decoded the Khan system. The slightest amount of
ignition noise from the spark plugs caused the decoder to shut down stereo
and revert to mono.
No wonder the ~!@#$%^&* thing never took off!!!!
Brian Goldsmith.
When AM Stereo was launched on Feb 1 1985 It was quoted that 8 out of
every 10 radio listeners who favour AM Stations could now listen in
Stereo.
In Brisbane I think 4BK was one of the original test broadcasters back
in about 1983 along with Radio 10 and 4KQ. I remember seeing the
equipment in at the old Queen St studios in Newspaper house. It was
quite easy for Radio 10 to test because the new studios (4 On Air & 1
Production in Brisbane plus Full On Air Studios at Grundys in The
Paradise Centre on the Gold Coast and the little Studio in the Surf
Lifesavers Tower at Alexander Headlands on the Sunshine Coast) were
allready wired to go in Stereo and they remained unchanged almost up
until the shift to The TAB Building in 1990.
By Feb 1985 4BK was in the New Bowen Hills Building and I Remember
4BH had a Refit with new gear and I can't remember what was happening
at KQ but they were all ready to go on the same day. 4GG and 4SS were
also well set up long before the start date along with 612 4QR which
was the only ABC Station in Southern Qld to Go AM Stereo. The ABC's
4SO the old Southport station was only on over the holiday periods and
this was replaced by coast FM late in 1980's (1988???)An It was still
in mono.
Radio 10 was a real pusher of AM Stereo. In the Christmas New Year
period of 1984 (3 months before the official launch) I remember all
the new Stereo 10 banners going up along the South East freeway and
the highway to the Sunshine coast reminding drivers to take it
carefully on the road and merry Christmas from Stereo 10.
A number of car Audio shops around South East Qld were selling AM
Stereo radios and even the K Mart auto section had a good range. This
was before Feb 1 1985.
Some stations were on testing especially on the Thursday nights and
Audio shops could demonstrate the product. Alot were sold and alot of
people bought AM Stereo radios by default not even realising that they
had the capability.
This was good for radio 10 and even people would ring to find out what
duty free stores contained recievers.
The following radios were readilly available in Brisbane stores and
you could by them nearly everywhere.
CAR STEREOS
Concord HPL 500, AWA Clarion 990E,Sony Walkman,Pioneer KEA 433AM
Sansui, Eurovox MCC 2330R & 2301R, Plus all the Voxon Car Range
HOME
Marantz SR 440, Sansui SX 1100, Sherwood, Yamaha plus all the Voxon
Home Range
I Think the most popular of them all was the SONY 1 Rack Unit tuner.
It had excellent specifications and was suitable for both Professional
and domestic use. I know alot of people who have these units and
still enjoy the quality. Though a number have had battery
complications.
Jacar made a conversion kit for about $19.00 and the big one of them
all was the Playmaster kit from Dick Smith that had very good
specifications.
The original off air monitor at Radio 10 was this playmaster kit in a
rack case and to my knowledge it is still in use at the TAB Studios.
It sounded great in the cans and the distortion was minimal.
4KQ used the Pioneer KE 433AM car tuner for off air monitoring and 4BH
used (I Think) General Electronic Developments 1124s monitor reciever.
(4GY Still use theirs now and have a Late Model Stereo Set up but keep
it switched off from Stereo).
Alot of country stations simply used the Voxon Car radio that won an
award for superior sound as the standard monitor.
The Holden commodores from about 1986 contained standard eurovox AM
Stereo Radios. BMW had a similar Eurovox standard up until about
1993. Toyota put standart Philips AM Stereo radios in all their
Camrys from 1986 until about 1991. They continued well into the
1990's in their Land Cruisers. The EA Fairmonts ,Fairlanes and LTD's
contained AM Stereo Radios up until the Next Model was released which
then discontinued the feature but still contained the Wide Band
selector switch which was what really made AM Stereo Good. You could
probably find these in second hand shops or wreckers.
2BS 2HD 2KO 2KY 2MW 2OO 2WL 3AK 3DB 3MP 3XY 4SS 6IX 6KY 6PM 6PR 7HO
&7HT used Exciters And Modulation Monitors from Delta Electronics Co
to convert their transmitters and also chose CRL Audio processing.
This may help you find something to use to listen in but most
importantly look for the wide band feature on the unit.
By the way the old 4BK Black Thunders had Voxon car radios in AM
Stereo in them and when John Knox finished reading the news on day 1
of AM Stereo he ended with This is 1296AM Stereo 4BK. Stereo 10 had
the Jingle S T E R E O T E N radio 10 in STEREO.
It was exciting to be in AM Radio when Stereo was launched
As of about 12 months ago was back to AM Mono, not sure now, but I doubt
they'd go back to AM stereo. I have a Claroin 980e (I think) AM stereo/FM
Stereo car cassette deck if anyone wants to hear crisp clear AM stereo
anywhere except Adelaide, It'll cost ya though :-)
Congrats on a well informed post on the trials and tribulatons of AM Stereo
circa '85. Mmmmm, 'remember it well. Add 2CC Canberra to your list of
stations that jumped on the CRL processing bandwagon. That station
installed its first mono CRL in 1982. Always a clean sound - not as fat and
thick as I would have liked, but they did a good job. CC's (pre FM)
competitors in those days over at 2CA went CRL eventually.
Both stations were VERY committed to AM Stereo promotion through 85/86. In
fact, both stations ran the same promo campaign which was voiced by 'Mr Fox
8' himself, Paul Ricketts. 'Can't speak for CA, but at CC we dropped the AM
Stereo hype when the supp FMs were announced in 1987.
It (AM Stereo)always sounded terrific in the studio monitors - but in 'out
there land', where it counts, no one was hearing it...........except the the
PD and the Chief Eng. Can't recall any of the jocks being terribly
interested in purchasing AM Stereo back then. And the manager of the time
wouldn't have known Stereo if it bit him. No, not you John Mc.

In article <9uqc4p$4nh$1...@news.eisa.net.au>, macm...@austarmetro.com.au
says...
I Wonder if the section 39's had not have come along would AM Stereo
become stronger. It was a good marketing feature for a staion to
broadcast in Stereo. When 10 went stereo people in the street and at
OBs would tell me how great it was and these people had not even
bought a new radio. It was a good ploy. Only 2 commercial staions can
ever say that they could (and still can) broadcast in Stereo from
Byron Bay to Gympie and thats 4KQ & Stereo 10 (4IP, 4IO, Radio Ten,
Stereo Ten, Lite & Easy 1008,4IP, 4TAB, Radio TAB).
By the way I have seen your web page It's good. The big AMers in The
US now have special days where they spend one day broadcasting in
their original top40 format. WABC (music radio 77) pulls the biggest
figures of any local station in the area on this day each year. Of
course they are now all news. But this is a major promotion for the
station not just a nostalgic exercise.
It would be fantastic to do that type of thing in Australia. You
would have most of the material for 2SM or 3XY or even TEN to try a
Broadcast.
3XY would be easy because the old frequency is still there. Surely a
special licence could be given for the day or payment to the
narrowcasters. The races are not every Sunday in Southern Qld and
Summer holidays on 2SM you just never know who would listen. Give it
some thought.
Cheers
We still need to know the stereo status of:
2KY - 1017 Sydney
6PR - 882 Perth

separation of channels?
3AW,3RPH,"3AK",News Radio 1026kHz,"3UZ", "3LO",Magic 693 and Radio National
621.
I cannot say which ones may be transmitting stereo information with the
exception of Magic 693.

3RN has never been in stereo. I don't think 3RPH has been either.
My stereo LED only lights up for Magic, 3UZ, 3AW, and 3MP - but 3AK is

I wrote that letter - also had a longer similar one it The Age Green

If you want to support the continuation of AM stereo write to either
3MP or its new owner - 3AK.
(Peter Tarnawski is station manager at 3MP and has sounded positive
about going back to full stereo for the last 12 months)
(This is Jeff Chatfield - the current boss of both stations - does he
live in Singapore - who knows?)
The point is 3MP was Australia's best AM stereo station continuously
since February 1985 till 12 months ago. They must go back to AMS!
It seems ludicrous that the new owners have provided 3AK with a new
Nautel transmitter which booms the signal through in AM stereo - and
its sounds great!
But it's basically a talk station - still sounding great in stereo.
Yet 3MP - the 24/7 music station is left with the AMS led pilot on but
no separation. This is a real radio tragedy.
Please write!!!

639 was originally 2CS in Coffs Harbour, but as Paul corrected me ,they had
converted to FM.
639 is still in Coffs harbour and its official call sign is 2HC.It still
operates using 5KW from the original 2CS site and directional 170m high
towers. It is located 23km south of the town.
2CS commenced transmission in 1985 using a Harris MW10 transmitter.
According to an airline directory I have, the air distance from Coffs
Harbour to Brisbane is 336km.

OK - thanks Paul.
2CS Coffs Harbour will be listed as AMS - pilot only ... unless
Voltare or anyone can verify the channel separation. The format will
be "easy listening" unless someone comes up with something more
specific.
Why is it that stations "choose" to broadcast this way? Effectively
in stereo that nobody can hear. It it the tardiness of the engineers
as regards to wiring, or a decision made by the managements?
You'd think that if these stations were thinking of a digital future
they'd be in true AMS mode now - ready for the change.
