Hi Everyone

I've looked few a few of the past comments on Google Groups about
River 949, the Brisbane station - it seems quite controversial????

I live on the Gold Coast and stumbled on this station. I found it
refreshing, a breath of fresh air compared to Gold, Sea, and B105.
There weren't so many commercials, the music was great, a huge mix of
rock, pop, dance and, thankfully not too much r&b.

But it kind of puzzles me....what is the River city? Is that
Brisbane? Because I noticed it looks like they have a big office at
Southbank in Brisbane or something, the traffic is for Brisbane, etc,
but all the ads seem to be for Ipswich, isn't that way out the back of
Brisbane? And someone said something about them not being included in
radio ratings or something? And their motto about being "the OTHER
new FM station" seems really weird.

But yeah, they have cool music, I loved their motto "we don't pick
what hits to play like the other stations, we play ALL the new hits"
which isn't totally true, but yeah, they play a great variety compared
to the bloody Gold Coast stations. The only thing I hated was after
the news they would always play bloody Ashanti and "Foolish". Gave me
the shits.

But I find their announcers have great personalities. And you have to
love a station who will play Alcazar. :) Makes me feel like I'm in
Europe :)

Would love all those in the new to inform me of the details of this
station, and are they going to improve their signal on the Gold Coast,
we definitely need a station like this!

I think you've explained it better to yourself, and us,than anyone could.

Doubt they'll be improving things for GC listeners though. And why would they
being an Ipswich station and all.

We get it well up on the Sunny Coast too, very clear all the time.
Brisbane is the river city and River would dearly love to be a
Brisbane station, hence the name, traffic reports and the Brisbane
office, however they are an Ipswich station and have to stay there, as
the ABA or the XYZ, whoever they are, told them a few weeks ago.
Unfortunately Ipswich people are pissed at them for trying to be a
brisbane station and dont have a huge following there.
What comes out of the speakers is great, the reason people bitch about
them is everyone seems to hate the CEO. From people i know who know
him or have worked with him, he is not very popular with the staff.
The industry dont seem to like him either, perhaps Marcus knows more
on why this is and why they put up with him.

Ahhh, probably why he had Dave Andrews sacked then because he was so
pissed and stunned someone wouldnt talk to him and treat him like a
god! lol! Good on Dave I say! Shame he was sacked for it though. He
lost a good operator there due to his ego. I heard that some staff in
the past had sued him, have you heard anything about that Mike?

There have certainly been rumours floating around to that effect...
but I've never talked to anyone who has actually sent the lawyers in.
Unfortunately, the radio industry in OZ is so small (comparable to say
America), that jocks can't afford risking whatever little reputation
they might have by suing a former manager or radio station. And the
MEAA couldn't give a stuff about jocks in country radio staitons. If
they did, they would be out their campaigning for better conditions
and better wages. Would you believe a commercial jock in a country
market is more than likely still on the award rate of $26.5K, AND I
would put the figure at 60% the amount of jocks forced to do overtime
- sometimes amounting to an extra day a week.

This is the type of stuff Burns preys on. He once had me work from
8am to 1am (with 1 meal break), then complained and hassled me because
I didn't turn up for work the next day at 9 (I got there at 10). Did
I get extra pay - course not. Or how about this little pearler.
Imagine getting a memo in November from management which says 'if you
hear the station off air at any time, it is your responsibility to
come to work and get it back on'. So, when I heard the sattelite link
down on Christmas Day - like a good little pleb, I went into the
station at 11am - AND left at 4pm. Totally missed lunch with my
family and children. And when I had (oh the horror) the audacity to
ask to be payed, I was basically laughed at by station management.

I hope someone from the MEAA is reading this. Its high time they knew
just how much the mis-serve their clientele. I know of jocks who have
been penalised just by being members of the union.

Anyway - there is my bitch for the day!!!

And gee - I feel all the better for it!

re the MEAA....the problem I as I see it is that there are not enough
members in the stations, the reality is that you need strength in
numbers.
As a member they came to the aid of me when I was threatend, but as a
group ie announcers we need more members to do anything....a good
example is the ABC staff who are members and they often butt heads
with management...thats how it works Mike ....strength in numbers!!!

You wouldn't be talking about a station in regional Qld by any chance,
there is still some good stories going around about it. I think the
best thing for that station was being purchased by DMG.

The jock turnaround at that stage made 3AK problems look small.

RIVER, Best FM ON AIR SOUND, FULL rich, well seperated and no crummy 3D
enhancment. well equalised with no distortion. (not over processed)

Music is good, better than B105 and 97.3, but too many repeats. great format
though.
there funny without trying.

all in all the best FM station brisbane have to offer.

What the hell is this newsgroup?
Is it the river fan/hate club?

Is it not a station that broadcasts into Brisbane? Big deal - there is
more to australianb radio than just one station in one town.

Who are thes posters? Voltare, ArfurChubby, Charlie Tuna, webwombat,
wollongon quokka. Then the various net geeks and Marcus Fitz-Gerald
and Shun Stapleton and Briab Goldsmith and Jon Vertigan.

I've been watching this group for nearly 6 years and why bother-you
get better goss off the back of the toilet door at Bondi junction
Plaza Tower - sweet view there.

Write somehting interesting and someone might care.

Yeah, this one has been watching, and then complains that it
doesn't cater for his desired entertainment.

Tough luck - you don't like it, don't read it, or, and this is
something you won't have the balls to do, try contributing something that
will generate interesting writing.

If a conversation in a pub that you are overhearing isn't all that
interesting, do you think that you have the right to start abusing the
people?

Try interacting - Usenet is all about that.

Why the interest in RIVER949 ....

We believe it is because this is such a stark example of a waisted
opportunity.

All of us on this news group have an appreciation of and desire to make and
hear "Great Radio" Creative, relevant and profitable. This sad little radio
station is such a long way from fulfilling it's promise...it is a crime.

Have you heard it lately ....The production on breakfast anchor Dean Miller
doing promos and sweepers is very very bad.... do yourself a 20 / 40 & 60
minute music monitor at any time of the day ... tell us that someone gives a
shit about what goes to air!

We should all make sure the clowns (executives) who run this toilet block
are recognised for the crime they are committing...

CEO Richard Burns (creative peak - when he got his first erection!) most
unrespected operator in the biz.

GM James Dien (puppet - not involved in running the radio station...just a
sales rep, out of the office most of the time, and can you blame him?)

PD Allan Roebuck ..........Well .......We hear he is a nice bloke, but great
radio is not a concept this man is familiar with, or so it would seem.

Production Kelvin Siggs ... Production values have always been a problem in
Ipswich ... wonder why?

And now these clowns have another license to butcher on the Sunshine Coast
... bet ya RG a crapping themselves...sorry that should be cacking
themselves!!!

At least when you have idiots like this in the biz makes you look better...

COME ON Creek to Coast FM....Raise the Bar if you can !!!!!

I beg to differ.

The original Ipswich crew (qfm) were highly skilled and talented in
both Production and Programming.

I know this is out of context with Star currently but Ipswich has had
some excellent talent over the years, and to condemn everybody who
has worked there at some point is not only unfair but perhaps a tad
ignorant.

This goes to everybody who dislikes River949

Why would we want another B105, Triple M or 973, yes B105 is way infront of
there compentition it would be a bit of a worry if they dropped from No.1

I like River because of something different even if they have lost a lot of
money and half of there company share holders would like to jump ship as
soon as possible, they could of just played safely and started STAR949 which
might of been better for them or maybe not.

I agree with Radio Free on a few comments, why are they using Dean Miller
for VO work, I don't agree that somebody from on air should also do VO work
on the station. It may save the station money but the production side could
sound better.

Music played on River949 is good, and Wild Nights is also good but can go
off sometimes, which is good you want change as well.

I still don't why they don't have a Dance Top 20 on River like Nova have on
Saturday nights before Wild Nights.

I know this is a newsgroup but I really don't think River949 deserve all the
negative comments about them, they may have there problems.
