Most networks have a carefully choreographed and managed 'identity'.
Smart graphics, theme music and slogans - you know the form. Plenty of
grease, camaraderie and unity then they pull your favorite show off the
air or shift it to a ridiculous timeslot on a whim. It's all about
ratings- and while your loyalty as a viewer is taken for granted,
reciprocity is an illusion.
Each network has a voice - someone you never see on air but who
represents the channel's character and lends a sense of allure to
promotions, station breaks and ID spots. Since 1989, the principle
voice of SBS has been Robbie McGregor, whose measured tones and
convivial articualtion have become synonymous with the station's fare.
But why stick with someone tried and tested?
Piss them off ! Robbie has been given the broom and will cease his
duties on December 30.
Who will replace him and what will the new "persona" suggest? Is
Simon O'Donnell available ?
Perhaps Mark 'Jacko' Jackson could be given a try? Joyce Mayne and
Darryl Eastlake are probably free... If it ain't broke, don't fix it?
Good Lord, No ?
Endless tweaking and fiddling at the margins matter to viewers, who
prefer comfort and consistency. Is this another disturbing sign that
SBS is being reinvented - and not for the good - by executives who
despise loyalty yet demand it? By a supine board, which regards the
network's charter as underfelt while texting one another cheerful
messages of solidarity? Seeeee ya, Robbie! With any luck you'll run
into Bert Newton at the races.

Good luck and best wishes to Robbie for his 'SBS-less' future. It'll
be hard to imagine the 'sound' of the place with out him. However, I'm
sure he - and we - will all get by.

Just pondering this, and that other recent thread about big voices
where Robbie got a mention. Did you know that two of the longest
running v/os on Australian radio (for imaging) share the name sounding
surname. I refer to Ken Sparkes of 2UE/Ch 9 fame. It seems like he's
done their stuff FOREVER. But of course not. I can remember Ken doing
a spell on v/os for TEN Sydney in the early '80s.

His namesake, Ron E Sparks, has been the imaging voice for 2CA since
about 1993/4. Helluva long run don't you think?

Are there stations elsewhere that have had one voice for more than,
say, 10 years? Britten did the Triple stuff for many years didn't he?
I can't recall for how long though.

Deeksy on Channel 7 in Melb is one - he's been there for decades! oh & of
course Pete Smith on 9.

I liked it when Deeks hosted the powerball draws (the longer ones, not
these short number summaries), it was good to be able to "meet" some of
the personality behind the voice. If memory serves me he cohosted
Tattslotto with that lady I'm not going to try and spell, before Gavin
Wood took over. The two hosts on Tattslotto made the draw interesting,
even if you had no interest in what numbers came out.

If/when Seven bring back Wheel Of Fortune, I hope Deeks does the
voiceovers, Nine brought back Shawn Cosgrove for The Price Is Right
which was good, it just happened to be in the wrong timeslot.

Anyway, SBS won't sound the same ever again, I almost always sit
through the 5 minutes of ads after a show, don't think I can do that
again...

Channel Nine Melbourne Voice Overs just wouldn't be the same without
Pete Smith.

Bit like you need to hear Shawn Cosgrove with the Price is right...

AND Gavan Wood with Countdown...

CrowdedHouse (Memories... OH... I better check the Rage website to see
if there is any Countdown Repeats on this Saturday night!)

Strange that he was getting a run in the earlier thread & then this comes
up. Is it the 30th of Dec 2005 or 2006?

Here's some vintage Robbie for those who missed it earlier:

The regular Channel 9 Sydney voice over guy has been MIA over summer - just

He was filling in on morning's on 2GO when I was listening just before
Christmas. I suppose he is based on the Central Coast so it would of been
easier for him to pickup work at the local stations, when he was taking a
break from the rest of his commitments.

The V/O guy who is also a announcer at River949 who has been doing a lot of
voices for regional TV has a pretty good voice

Not Carl Leibold.

Shaun.

Gavin Wood eh

Memories of tripping over ego as I departed Studio 2 of a morning, but
then great memories of a great time working as GW's sidekick in the
latter part of our existence as KZFM.

Looks as though 2CA might be changing format and VO guy???
They currently are running a promo using a female doing the VO for a promo
about building a new radio station, tell us what you think starting Monday!
I hope they ditch AFL and don't place that 90s and new stuff into the mix to
compete with one of the FMers which does the same. If they do so I will no
longer listen on my travels along the Hume!!!

I think they run that survey every couple of years (unless I heard it
on another radio station), but a female VO on CA? Must check that out
and see what's going on.

The balancing act in spoken word is the fine line between the performer
and the performance. Where they are the same, it can get boring, but
when the spoken word artist actually tries to perform the work without
getting in the way of the work, it can be exhilarating. Likewise with
the voice alone, when it is simply trying to deliver the words, it has
great effect upon the listener. When your personality is there, your
voice is unaware of its importance, and you crouch all your timidity,
embarrassment, or effusiveness over your delivery. It diffuses the
effect of the words and you are left with nothing to stand upon. With
spoken word, you may be able to save yourself through physical gesture,
or interaction with the audience, or electronica, but reading by voice
alone is the most naked, most revealing, and if the words are half
lost, the performance can be most unsatisfying.

Ray mate....You never cease to amaze me in your battle against AFL on 2CA on
these newsgroups

It's not going to be ditched mate, if they're building a "new station" I
would think that they could be looking at more coverage of the sport...I
would be very concerned about Saturday Nights with the "new station" slogan
being thrown around

Some classic presenters in that list also, would this be where Pete Smith
could be in the future? Or Gold 104?

There isn't a person in the world I would rather eat a hot dog without the meat in it other than Robbie. I'd get some advice on my acne from him and he would recommend ascorbic acid I'm sure, and if he wanted to watch the late night classic black and white movies, I wouldn't make him do it under the blankets as some have made him do. He's a classic, a gentlemen of the old school with a big laugh, and a bigger personality to match it. SBS is the loser
