Almost every submission is short and to the point, reading something like
this: " I am a passionate listener to 6PR - have been for years. When I
moved to Rockingham (or Mandurah or some nearby suburb) a few years ago, I
was disappointed with the 6PR reception. Now when I can't hear 6PR I switch
to another channel [sometimes they are bold enough to say 6IX). Please do
something to make it possible to hear 6PR Talk Radio in my area. I can hear
it OK in the car, but not inside the house."
Some submissions are typed. Some are hand written. Most are not trying to
be eloquent but they do seem honestly interested in a better 6PR service.
It would seem station loyalty runs deep among 6PR listeners. This is great
to see.
I haven't read every submission, but of those I read I never encountered
anything negative about 6PR or any other station effected by the proposals
in the draft. Oh, accept one. A submission from 6IX crying foul against
ACMA for not treating the two competing AM commercial stations fairly in
this reshaping of the radio frequency landscape in Perth. 6IX is not happy
with what 6PR is getting, and is disappointed with what ACMA are offering
the station on which Jonny Young is the Breaky host.
My submission is the standout document. Not because it is especially
clever, but because it talks about LPONs and exclusion zones around Bunbury
and elsewhere. It stands out because it is so very different from the 'fan
mail' that comprises most the submissions. Looks like 6PR have been
campaigning, pump priming the support base to give ACMA a serve. 6PR is a
good talk station. Their audience is mature, so you could argue that these
submission are indicative of the 'grey power' supporting this well
established talk station. I must say 6PR's website is one of the best I've
seen for a radio station - very nice. No mention of any campaigns to move
ACMA in a certain direction though. However, I find it hard to believe that
the submissions to the draft variation are all evidence of spontaneous
support for improving 6PR's reception at the extremities of the Perth Metro
zone. NO wonder 6IX is angry.
I just hope ACMA does something to really reform the frequency landscape
for the Perth radio scene - including LPONs. I watch and wait.

But it should be noted that for all intents and purposes, 6IX is in the
same building as PR and share facilites and even in some cases staff -
Johnny Young's Producer Petger Brennan was also spending his weekends
in Summer producing Tod Johnston's Big Weekend, and they even share the
same music computer system as well - and the same technicians manage
6PR, 6IX and 96fm.
I the problem is that the audio processing for IX is optimised for the
AM signal rather than for the FM Translaters with a lot of bass, not
much treble in some tracks, plus all it's pre FM Translation tracks are
in mono, especially some of the 60's stuff - you'd think that they
would reload the entire system with stereo tracks where available
(though it should be said that some of the original 60's recordings are
the Mono versions as released.

Is 6IX really stronger than 6PR in Rockingham/Mandurah; all things being
equal 882 should be better than 1080 kHz?
My recollection (from years ago) was they were about the same, with the old
6KY 1206 (now 94.5) being weaker.
Peter,
6IX have an FM Translater for Mandurtah/Rockingham, as well as one for
Wanneroo and surrounds - both on 105.7Mhz - in fact you can pick up the
105.7 Mhz quite well using an external antenna in Middle Swan :-)
That is why 6PR are applying for an FM Translater, ad apparently 6PR's
reception in Elenbrook is quite poor compared to ABC 720.
