Now I would be more likely to believe The Age rather than the
'sensationalistic' Herald Sun (which probably twisted the story to get
the word 'gay' into the headline) as Barber's ratings were less than
impressive, but what is the true story here? Did Barber resign, or was
he sacked from 3AW?
I think he's sacked. The clash with Nine over the Paxton kids happened at
the wrong time, just before the ratings were released. IMHO, he shouldn't
do anything as silly as to ask listeners to boycott ACA. BTW, I think he
should enter politics, he's a very good match to Jeff :-) (I thoroughly
enjoyed his interview with Jeff 2 weeks ago, lots of fire, just like 2
school boys fighting each other).

I've read several times now that it was a "mutual agreement" to resign.
Whatever that means. Admittedly that was all from the Age, because I refuse
to read the Herald-Stun (media ownership concentration reasons, and I just
don't like tabloid rubbish).

I've never been one to agree with much that Paul Barber said, but I don't
think there's anything wrong with suggesting a boycott of anything - as long
as you don't discriminate against those who choose not to follow the boycott.
And I don't have a problem with Nine dropping the advertising on 3AW because
of that - it's their money, they can do with it as they wish.
But I do think that the outcome casts severe doubts over the editorial
independence of AW. Given their efforts earlier this year to stamp out an
independent news service (3MP/Magic 693) and now annoucers who do not
follow the station "line" are suddenly disappearing...
The least they could have done was let Paul Barber say goodbye to his
listeners.
[Off topic slightly]
Melbourne desperately needs a third current affairs station. Perhaps if
Gold's ratings drop low enough...
I must admit, talk on FM sounds absolutely fantastic. I've listened to the
BBC on FM at night, and voice comes across so well. The ABC regionals on FM
are fantastic listening, and I've even had the misfortune to hear John Laws
on 3NE's Myrtleford FM translator station: apart from the content of the
show, it sounded really great.
Oh well, back to ABC News Radio & 3LO...

AW seems to have a policy not to allow their announcers to broadcast once
they've been dumped/resigned. Hinch was yanked ASAP; Mark Day managed to
get a final show in because he handed in his notice just before going into
the studio.

Well, Margaret Fletcher and Sarah Henderson got their goodbyes to the
listeners. They know Paul Barber is a loose cannon so ... Anyway, I've deleted
3AW from my radio dials now.
