well it's quite ironic that the then proposed format for 3XY, reported to be
largely a mix of 60s and 70s hits, was picked up by KZFM (who re-badged as
"Gold 104") barely a month after the XY deal fell through. And KZFM/Gold
was rewarded with a ratings leap.
I dont remember any of the names in the proposed XY line up although Johnny
Young springs to mind - and a couple of years later he did surface - as the
breakfast announcer on XY's later successors, Magic 693.
The voiceover man who headed the bid to take over 3XY with the 60s/70s
format was a guy called (i think) Rod Stone??? I also remember seeing the
new lineup appear in the Green Guide radio listings and was sorry to finally
lose the pseudo-top 40/dance music format that 3XY had in those dying months
but then i flicked the radio on that Monday morning and the old team and
format were still there - up to the day when AWA finally turned the station
off at 1.00pm on Monday 23 September 1991.
it was towards the last days of 3XY... they had stopped simulcasting with
Bay FM and doing their own program... they didnt really have a set format...
they had no ratings or audience to speak of... and barely any advertising...
so i suspect they just played whatever they felt like... there was a mix of
top 40, some 80's hits, a dance track or two thrown in... some 'classic'
rock and the occasional retro tune... sort of a real mixed bag...
I'm sad to say, that our beloved 3XY would not have survived (well not
enough to compete with the FOXFM's EON-FM/Triple M..etc anyway)
In 1989, when the station's owners (the Catholic Church) alluded to
staff that they had put in a bid for the next 2 Melbourne FM licences
- but in reality had not, the fate of 3XY was sealed. The then 3KZ
(now Gold 104) paid at the time an amazing $22 million for the rights
to broadcast on FM, 3TT (now MIX) paid $10 million..and 3XY was left
to rot on the AM band.
Any real talent, no matter how talented they are/were would have taken
a chance on an AM music format station - the tide had turned by
then..and FM music was the now chosen outlet for radio music
listening.
Ironically, 3XY with it's 1988-1989 Easy Rock format (under the
guidance of PD Gary Collins) was ahead of TT-FM et al..who later
adopted what we all know as the MIX format. Given an FM licence, who
knows where they might have been now.
Sigh....RIP 3XY...

If my memory serves correct 3KZ paid (the Oz record) $32 million to
move to FM. 3AK made the next highest Melbourne bid - $15 million -
and (not suprisingly) defaulted - so TT (formerly 3DB) moved "up" to
FM paying $11 million.
3KZ paid so much that they soon went broke. TT wasn't that far
behind. What a dreadful result that both these stations are now
controlled by the beancounters at the US giant Clear Channel - whose
slogan should be "we don't worry about quality or ratings ... we only
worry about money".
Oh for the days when you had to prove you were worthy of owning a
licence - as opposed to having the most loot.
From memory... and I have a copy of the guide somewhere.
5.30 - 9.00 DENNIS SCANLAN
9-12 JOHNNY YOUNG
12-4 TBA
4-8pm RIC STONE AND COXY
8pm-12 FRANK McKAY
middawn JOHN TAMB
It went something like that... I remember reading they were in
negotiations with someone for afternoons but weren't saying much more
than that. Then of course the whole deal fell through.
XY's last line-up
6-10 MIKE RYAN
10-2 ROXANNE BENNETT
2-6 DAVE GIBNEY
6-12 KEN LANE
BRENDAN BARNES did 6pm-12pm SAT/SUN nights. RICK WALL who'd been with
the station on and off over the years was in the newsroom.

It seemed to be a second-rate station until it went "Big 30" in 1967. By the
early 1980s it was all but gone thanks to FM.
3AK had its "golden era" in the 1970s and 1980s with its "beautiful music"
format from 1973 to 1985.
Another "golden era" that is rarely discussed was the "sound survey" era on
3KZ that lasted from the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s.
And of course there was the "greater 3UZ" through the 1960s and into the
1970s.
Were these "golden eras" were almost as successful as that of 3XY?
And today, 3AW's current "golden era" has probably outlived those on any of
the other stations.
I think the only other "golden era" that would come anywhere near it would
be 3DB in the 1940s and 1950s when it achieved audience ratings approaching
50% (?) - figures that have never been attained since.
So perhaps one could ask why the "golden era" of 3XY captures so much
attention while similar successful periods on other stations are all but
ignored.

***** Forgive me if I'm wrong but the figure of $64 million sprang into my
mind,can any one else remember?
Brian
Goldsmith.
I seem to recall hearing him on Sport 927 not too long ago.
My recollection of AK's bid was $22 m, followed by TT's $11 m.
Well done ah it is all coming back.
Mike - can I say something?
This is a radio forum is it not.?
Those of us who have been in the industry more than 5 minutes don't
mind the odd trip down memory lane..and if it means talking about what
could have been - so be it. It's still radio, radio news, radio
gossip, radio history to (hopefully) learn from and use in today's
industry.
My first PD warned me when he employed me - be careful once it (radio)
gets in your blood, you'll never want to let it go.
After 15 years..it's still running thru my veins...so you'll forgive
me for my (and may others') indulgences....
