I just want to see how many locals read this newsgroup by announcing a new
FM commercial radio station which is currently testing. Some of you may
have spotted an advert on the TV about how boring current radio stations
are and that this is going to change on September 30. My reaction was that
this was a typical ploy by one of the existing stations announcing a format
change. Not surprising giving the rivalry of Triple M and PMFM. However
there really is a new radio station starting up on Monday, September 30!
Frequency: 97.3 FM
Station: Owned by West Coast Radio Pty. Ltd, currently operating the
6MM AM radio station in Mandurah/Pinjarra.
Target Area: Mandurah and surrounding environs.
Starting: 11am Monday, September 30, 1996
I was able to easily pick up the test transmission in stereo from Spearwood
(about 6 km south of Freo). The question is how far into the Perth metro
area can this transmission be picked up?
So just to test and see me how many local people do read this newsgroup I
welcome follow up posts answering the following questions:
1. Can you pick up the broadcast in stereo? mono?
2. Where are you located?
3. Is there any interference with SBS radio on 96.9 and ABC FM on 97.7?
4. How well can you pick up 6MM on 1116 AM?
The answers for me are:
1. yes and yes
2. Spearwood (about 50km north of Mandurah)
3. No
4. Weak as water!
Test transmissions are most likely to run during the late afternoons and
early evenings.
Other tantalising questions are:
1. Is this station going to replace or supplement/compete with 6MM? Will
there be a change in format?
2. Can people in Bunbury pick up the station? Can people in Perth proper
pick it up? If yes than this station has a hell of a big audience!
Cheers,

Yep, you are not alone in the local area. I've only just started to stick
my nose into this group.
It's a brand spanking new radio station alright! I've been able to pick up
the signal here in Inglewood (5-10km North of Perth) in full stereo without
much problem. I've experienced no interference from or to adjacent stations,
but their existing AM service is very scratchy here.
As far as I understand the new FM service is to complement their existing AM
service, but I would expect a little format "tweaking" of both sooner than
later.
