Does anyone know where the transmitter was located for 4GG 1197 AM on
the Gold Coast and if it was good enough to pick up in Brisbane?

Thanks Paul for your reply. Any further information about 4GG would be
great.

Thanks again Paul, but I already knew that. The studio building has been
revamped and is now offices and a local councillor Lex Bell I think used
it for his state election campaign.

4GG had a directional aerial which resulted in very little signal towards
Brisbane. It's coverage on 5KW was from Murwillumbah to Beenleigh from
memory

Ewen Cameron was the Chief Engineer, he now works for the ABC in Tassie as a
jock, also the PD was Gary Boughen who works for LE Boughen & Co in Brisbane
( bcast equipment suppliers ) perhaps they be able to give you some more
info ?? I also know TJH Systems ended up with the Motorola CQuam exciters
and I think they were Harris transmitters.

Cheers

Andrew

Last time I went to the transmitter site it was next to the Bundall
racecourse. Can't
remember if it was audible in Brisbane but contour maps published by the
Dept suggest that signals would have been marginal over the bayside areas
and non-existent elsewhere.
It's probably all academic as I believe the land has probably long since
been developed with housing or something similar and no longer available for
broadcasting. Also isn't the 1197 frequency pencilled in by the ABA for use
in Brisbane?

I wonder if they ever ran more power than 5 kW ? The State Broadcast
Engineer would have been after them if they were

There's a station! Wow..the names that went through there
(and are still around).

Remember the day the gunman walked in on Gouldy?

I live on the Sunshine Coast and can remember the changeover to FM for 4SS
(My sister and I sat with two radios... one 828AM, the other 92.7FM because
we didn't believe the same people could be on different stations at the one
time... we were both very young.)

What was the incident with the gunman?

Also, who are some of the people who have gone through the station onto
big(ger) things. Kim Mothershaw (4KQ) was there in the early '80s if I'm not
mistaken. Who else?

Cheers,
Michael

Great Stuff on all the 4GG info. I was just curious as I was very young
when they changed over to FM. According to the Gold Coast Bulletin, 4GG
was a great station with a lot of personalities and lots of O.B's and
lots of concerts. Or so they say. It was a shame to see it on FM and its
eventual demise as it went through many station changes, 4 triple G then
KROQ then K-Rock then the big fall from grace to Gold fm as it is today
(gold fm is not my scene)

Yes, I remember 4SS's great coverage area, easily reciveable on the Gold
Coast and in the Southern suburbs.

The 4GG transmitter site was located in Crombie Avenue Bundall.
