Don't budding commercial announcers get taught anything about correct pronunciation of band names at radio school anymore?  So often I hear the kids on 97.3 (Brissy) back announce J Geils Band as the "J Giles Band (hard 'G')!!!!

EVERYONE knows the correct pronunciation of this huge 80s band, I thought!  And why doesn't their PD, or at least MD, pull them up on it?  It's sloppy, slack and damn unprofessional.

I've always thought it was silly that the letter G could either be pronounced hard (as in game) or soft (as in gym).  From now on, I reckon it should only be hard, and if a word needs a soft G then it will be replaced with J eg jymnasium, jiant, Jorj Washington, etc

And while we're on the topick, how bloody silly is the letter C when it could quite easy be replaced with a K or an S?  Again, I don't see why it kan't be replased.

It wood bee mutch morr simpul if werds werr spelt fonetikly!

With the evolution of the English language I'm sure it'll change for the
better within a 100 years.

By then, word wrapping may be available to most as well. <g>

What an outrage! And disrespectful to the rumbling classic rock
juggernaught that is the J. Geils Band, who of course have so many
hits that you can still hear on the radio today like 'Centerfold'.
Um...and 'Centerfold'. :p

Oh Bulldog... how can we forget that immortal classic "Freeze Frame"?
"Di di di diddle dit dit dit".
BTW everyone, I interviewed Jerome Giles once and asked him that
specific question. He told me it was a hard "G" and that if he wanted
to be called Jiles, he'd have used a J to make it catchy, and everyone
would call him JJ... but he didn't.
Gee whiz... or is that Jee whiz?

The key is in the spelling of the name. Geils ('g' as in 'go'), as opposed
to Giles, which would most commonly be pronounced Jiles ('g' as in
'genetic'). It's unprofessional and their MD should know better and correct
it. That's if he knows anything about the music he programs, that is!

Oh, I agree totally. But compared to half of the wacked out things
I've heard some announcers say in the past, it's small potatoes.
Still, if you're not comfortable and familiar with the music your
station plays then you really have no business being there, do you?

And that, Bulldog, is the very core of my comments. If you want to be in
radio, or ARE in radio, then do the decent bloody thing (not only by your
listeners, but by yourself!) and know your subject matter! It doesn't
matter if it's music, talk, or instore, you've GOT to KNOW your material!
That's where the community sector announcers hold it over most of their
commercial counterparts big time - most, if not all, community announcers
KNOW their material, heck, most are even PASSIONATE about it! And it shows
by the knowledgeable, insightful comments that are such a valuable part of
community radio programs.

Which is baffling, really, because so damn many commercial kids start out in
community radio these days. Do they forget all that initial training they
received at their local community station? One wonders what they're doing
on a commercial station, much less a bloody cap city one, if they don't know
their subject matter (in this case music)!!!!

Well, it depends on where you do your community radio, doesn't it?
Some of the city ones seem ok (I don't know what they teach in the way
of prep), but I remember doing my community radio out in Dalby years
ago, and I really don't think I learned anything except for how to
throw up and not hit my shoes. Ahhh, memories. :)
