I used Ray (now dec) and Holger for various assignments during my PD
days in the '80s. Both wonderfully rich voices - nice blokes too.
Also had the great (sadly also dec) Pete Ferrier do some stuff at 2CC.
But my fave, and therefore my nomination, would be the artist formerly
known as John Torv - now Jaan Torv, elder brother of Hans.

You're right there, Jimmy was strictly a news reader not a commercial
voiceover artist. And it is a liitle known fact that during 2SM's
period as a talkback station (1967-68) Jim was heard on Sunday nights
after the regular Catholic church service b/cast doing a music shift to
earn a few extra $$ on the side.
For those like Blooomoo who are fans of ol JA, let me say: have I got a
treat for you guys when my new website goes 'live' - probably next
week. Can't anymore right now except to use one of Jim's famous 'news'
sign offs. Iiiit's threee minutes past 10.
Cheers

My vote would be for Robbie McGregor - AKA King Wally Otto from Roy & HG &
the voice of SBS.
I think they need to be able to sell the unsellable - here's an effort by
Robbie (about 1MB):
http://www.rmk.com.au/robbie/audio/the_horrible_truth.mp3
The original question was: "...heavy weight, deep voice, voice over
guy"
It all started out quite sensibly. Ray McGregor, Holger Brockman et al.
Now thrown in we get newsreaders and announcers - the likes of Jim
Angel, Stan Rolfe <sic> (it's ROFE!), John Brennan & Rod McNeil - all
great in their respective fields. But, at the risk of stating the
obvious, they are NOT 'Voice Over' guys!
To drag things back on-topic, I think Steve Britten would have to be
near the top.
To me the big three were McGregor, Britten & Brockmann
(in no particular order).
JB
Uh-oh! The Jet Blower awakens from his slumber. So not as to upset his
sensitivities and to remain with the prog, I'd also rate Britten as a
contender for the biggest, ballsy-est v/o.
Is there a prize for Big Steve? Perhaps he could win C-Aaaaa-S-Hhh!
Other v/o faves of mine are Mike Drayson (he of Torv-esque pipes) and
for clarity/maturity it's hard to go past Paul Ricketts. Paul, along
with Kev Goldsby, probably hold the record for the most commercial
reads in Aust.

What's Robbie McGregor if he isn't a voice over guy?

In any case I still think that Ken Sparks has got balls! A worthy
contender and he's been around for ever!
The late Dal Myles could also do a great v/o as can Brian Proud and
John Downs.
Also an oldie (late - from the Greater 3UZ in Bleak City) - John
McMahon had one of the deepest voices I have heard.
My nomination of Stan the Man ROFE stands and Jet Blower can nick off
because he was always being booked for v/o work 15 years ago.
Probably the most prolific too- I hear Jim almost everywhere I go
around Australia in one guise or another.
Some New Zealand entrants for balls of the week would also need to
include Kevin Black, Fred Botica, and Ross Goodwin.
Of course- I'm also Gods gift to the microphone, and have my 1995
Goldies finalist certificate for best male voice over to prove it.
Yay for vari pitch!
Camel.
S Jones- Are you still yanking it or cranking it these days? lol...
Ray McGregor of course was also up there, loved pulling a shift with his
voice piercing through the station imaging.
Nothing sounded better than Ray with that voice saying "B104.9 ROCKS the
Border" or "B stands for BALLS"
And if you ever heard a certain Brendan Barnes at Sun Fm (Shep) in the mid
90's, who later I believe went on and did voice overs for something like the
Disney Channell overseas, had this massive voice that would make the
speakers shake.
Ahhh bring back the COCK rock deep voices I say, I might get more work :P

Do I detect some confusion on the thread here about names. The fact
that there are two McGregors, each with the first intital R, is
probably causing this.
Dear ol Ray, formerly of Brisbane, and Robbie - heard him doing
something on The Ms the otherday - from Sydney.
A good thing there wasn't two Brockmann's or we'd be all over the shop!
A-ha, but there was/is two Brennans. John of course, but son Peter -
who also did the v/o sign off during Ray Martin's term on Midday - is a
dead spit vocally for the old man.
And then there are two Torvs, Jaan (John) and Hans. Two Draysons even!
Is there no end to this. Where's young Jet Drayson these days?
Someone mentioned Jim Pilgrim. A worthy contender for deep ... and
loud! Onya Jimbo.
There's a bloke out of Melbourne who I liked on ads in the '70s and
'80s called Ric Stone. And who was that craggy little actor - very
gravelly - who voiced the original 3TT sweepers when they changed (from
3DB). He did a great job.

That wouldn't be David Bradshaw by any chance, Mr. Mac?
Also, maybe some clarification is in order here. Was the original
'poster' - when speaking of 'deep voice V/Os' - referring to the
promo/imaging side of the biz, or the 'retail' advertising sector?
Perhaps VK7NIK would care to elaborate.
And Mr. Samuel Lawre... - please keep a civil tongue in your head.

I believe Geoff McComas is still with us.

****** What about "Hello,I'm Ray Lawrence",couldn't get any deeper than

Brian Goldsmith.
I first met Ray at 3AW (People to people radio where news makes
conversation) in 1969 when he was presenting a Saturday evening program

Thanks Jet Blower for that learned response. I'm pretty sure David is
the guy I'm thinking of. He played a 'rough diamond' detective in
Phoenix or Janus on ABC...one of those...in the '90s. 'Think he was in
Skyways too, along with that other great radio stalwart, Peter Byrne
(3UZ, 3KZ, etc).
On your point about clarification of posts. Yes, totally agree, that
would be helpful. Are we talking v/o's or jocks with big voices here?
So many times I hop on a thread with a straight forward question only
to receive remarks that have little to do with the original question.
I guess this gets back to that hoary old chestnut about staying 'on
topic' whenever possible.
Anyway, good to hear from you 'Mr Blower'. Interesting handle that. I
wonder if I'll make it through 2006 on this group without incurring
your 'Jet Blowing' wrath. It hasn't escaped me that you seem to pounce
on this NG whenever things go off track or when a lame comment is made.

My. Backhanded compliments your speciality?
Lofty, Rod Field and Drayson all have fine deep
pipes.
One dimensional, but good at what they are asked
to do.
Don't forget Jim "I'd rather be driving" Pilgrim.
Timmy has a great range.
