What is 3UZ called these days? Can anyone tell me.

As a young person starting off my working life in Melbourne I loved
listening to the Greater 3UZ. But I believe it went horribly wrong after
that.

Its a shame as it was good listening to Allan Lappin, Stan Rofe and the many
others at UZ from that era

Sport 927. I think their ratings are lower than 3AK!

My memories of 3UZ go back to the 1950s although it wasn't a station my
family listened to regularly.
The news interested me most with the "Middy" march as the theme.
There was the Roland Strong editorial at about 0740; I remember one morning
he suggested all parents ask their children to leave the room while he
discussed a "delicate" subject. I can't remember what the subject was. But
it was the 1950s.
I can't remember when they changed to the Top 40 format but the Middy news
theme was discontinued in September 1959 so it must have been around that
time.

I just went to their web site. Gee, how sad!! No mention of any
personalities or of any station pro mos............Was such a bubbly station
in my days in the mid to late 60's.

Anybody know why it went to the pack? What stuffed up a winning format?

I'm interested.

Survey #8 2002
3AK 2.1
3UZ 2.4

The Greater has been the racing station for many years now - and
transmits to relay stations all over Victoria.

It's still in stereo and has nice music and talk programming
overnight. It's just introduced a new lightning news theme - it's
first in stereo - but still not as good as the old "Greater" ones.

It's a real shame that they're not saying 3UZ anymore as it is the
oldest callsign in Victoria.

Noel Crowe was in charge of 3MP when they successfully created Magic
693 in 1994. The old callsign - 3XY - had been trashed by a former
owner - who got the OK to move it from 1422 to 693 with the new
callsign 3EE (which it still is). And the 3XY callsign was grabbed by
the Greek community station that was given 1422.

Unfortunately Mr Crowe moved to 3UZ and decided he'd to the same thing
- hence it's been called 'Sport 927' ever since. It hasn't worked (as
it did with Magic - which seemingly grew from nothing).

3UZ's ratings have neither increased or dropped as a result - but
we've lost all those great jingles and the Great name. I reckon
there's no reason why "the Greater 3UZ" won't return. The callsign is
still 3UZ. And the owners are 3UZ Pty Ltd.

After all 2KY in Sydney are doing exactly the same thing and there's
no talk of them changing their name to 2TAB - like the Brisbane and
Hobart versions.

Poor old 3UZ...or Sport 927 now.
I'm sure Paul In Melbourne would remember during the 80's when they
became a country music station.
What ever happened to Toni T? She was such a nice girl and even
attended my wedding to Bert. She game us a nice pair of apricot swans.
I remember she got such a big write up in the Green Guide when she
first started. Stright from the Announcers Academy to 3UZ.
Bert tells me she went to canberra and then got married and had kids,
but hasn't been seen since
What happened to Jacque Custers? He was a nice lad doing the evening
program.
I sometimes listen to Sport 927 early on a Saturday morning. If I have
to get up and get Bert's medicine, It is nice to hear Peter Byrne
about 5.00 with the sunrise show, all hype and the sound of his 3KZ
days with, what sounds like, all his favourite songs.

Love always...ELsie

Hobart's 1080 is just another Sport 927 relay I'm afraid (like Launcestons's
1008) also noted on the website http://www.sport927.com.au
Not quite sure why the service is broadcasting into Tasmania, you'd think
they can make up their own action with "budding new Hobartians" who wannabe
race-callers

One of my Berts friends told me a funny story about the 3UZ lucky one
dollar note competition. The story goes along the lines of they had to
put the lucky $1 note into circulation, if found by a listener they
won!! (that was in the days that they had listeners)
Anyway what better place to put a note into circulation than the local
tavern. Anway they put the note into circulation and after a few more
cleansing ales, one of the lads had to get something from the milk
bar....and yes as part of his change he got back the lucky $1 note.

Gotta go, Bert's Toast and Eggs are burning. Should be good enough for
his tape-worm.

Love always....Elsie

I loved the voice of Geoff Haynes...could never stand him at 2KY, but he was
a great Good Guy at 2SM (during the second Good Guy area which also featured
Rod Muir and a guy called John Torv (yes it is Jaan).

I think the "among other things" would make an interesting story Brian?
My mother told me about another 3UZ announcer in the early 1950s who had to
leave all of a sudden after being charged with murder.
I read a good book called "Nashville Babylon" that contained rather
"downmarket" stories about country music artists. Perhaps "Australian Radio
Babylon" would be an interesting book for someone to write.
Paul in Melbourne
PS: I think Elsie and Bert must have enjoyed 3UZ country in the mid 1980s.
Perhaps they might be able to hear my Classic Country program on Yarra
Valley FM 99.1 on Sunday mornings; there is good reception at the retirement
village in the outer eastern suburbs.

Racing & Sport is a niche format, so obviously they're not going to achieve
high ratings. But it is a successful station, and to compare to 3AK is quick
harsh.

Likewise the other racing stations... they're never going to have a large
mainstream audience, but notice they keep making money and doing what they
do, year after year...
