For anyone in the 'eastern states' who may be interested in the machinations
of the Perth radio market, there have been some real upheavals amongst the
commercial stations in recent weeks. The local media is dubbing it 'Radio
Wars'

Former PMFM hosts Gary Shannon and Jane Marwick changed ships to 96FM (a
Southern Cross enterprise) and replaced Paul Redmon and Gary Kay, who won't
be crying too hard because not only do they no longer have to get out of bed
at 3.30 every morning but they can also ponder their futures while counting
the $350,000 payout they supposedly received. The original story was that
Shannon/Marwick/Redmon/Kay were to do a 4 hander brekkie shift but it wasn't
to be.

The new PM (Austereo) line up has undergone drastic rearrangement and now
consists of mostly new faces and a new(?) positioner 'The all new 92.9'.

6PR (Southern Cross) is having many problems. They are currently rating
their lowest for years and have been behind the local ABC for several
surveys. They get a new breakfast duo next Monday made up of an ex AFL
player, Adrian Barich and Basil Zempalis, a local Channel 7 sports
commentator. Former breakfast host Eoin Cameron was shown the door. There
is suggestion that the management believed he was too old for PR's audience.
He's 50. He pockets around 100 g's as a farewell gift and it's unlikely he
will be off the airwaves for long. ABC 720 is looking for the other half of
their new breakfast team and Eoin is at the top of the draft. Former 'West
Australian' editor Paul Murray is back for a second year in mornings and
they have a new Drive announcer (Peter Newman) or rather an old Drive
announcer back for another go after being away for many years. There has
been quite a bit of resentment on air from talkback callers claiming that
Southern Cross is spending too much money on 96FM and this will lead to a
reduction in the quality of 6PR's programs. Are these people voting with
their survey books?

6IX plays 'Good Time oldies' which showed respectable ratings mid-year but
slumped by year's end. They are looking forward to an increase in power
granted by the ABA which will help make them a 'local' station in many
suburbs. The station has been handicapped for what seems like forever due
to poor reception (as well as some really crappy management!!). Same 4
jocks as last year, one of whom, Leo Nelson is also Program Manager and
Music Director (radio on a shoestring).

Meantime, the number 1 station in the market, 94.5 (Austereo) continues to
rate close to 20 percent by being consistent with their MIX format and has
had no daytime line up changes for a couple of years. They lost Tony
Hartney from nights (what a waste!) last year
