Don't think so 'GB'. Phil is pretty much in retirement these days.
It's a coincidence you raise this question; Phil's former NEWUW
colleague John Crawford (a DJ form the '60s) was a writer for Wheels
magazine for a time in the '70s.

I may be speaking with Phil in a few weeks when my book released, I'll
ask him about the NRMA connection.

"Snob Mob" would be a somewhat politically incorrect term to use in 2005?

The name "Snob Mob" could be our very own "Mobbsy" in disguise. But I doubt
he's a "Snob"

But nice rhyming

Phil Hunter is one of the nicest people to ever grace the airwaves. I
remember him in Newcastle in the 60's at 2KO. He also hosted a TV show
at NBN - sort of Newcastle's answer to Brian Henderson's Bandstand
(lots of go-go girls). He had a pop star thing about him. I'm sure that
he married a Newcastle girl? Think he left Newcastle to go to the
funtastic 2UW as a 11-10 man.

Whatever happened to him after that?

Good memory Samuel and totally accurate!

2KO had the Music Men for a while, whilst 2HD had the Good Guys.

I remember watching him on NBN in that show and the first time I ever saw
him was during an OB from the 2KO studio at the Newcastle Show. 2HD, at the
time, also had a Newcastle Show studio.

Instant replay my friend - I also other Newcastle radio stars from what
were (in my opinion) - a few that spring to mind are Pat Barton, John
Laws, Matt Hayes, Gray Clark, Mike Jefferys, David Mulley, Clif
Musgrave, Art Ryan, John Hill, Alan McGirvan, Rod Spargo, Graeme
Gilbert, Twink Story, Dick Comerford, Malcolm T, Tony "Music" Williams.
Phil Hunter was a star in his own right during these heady day of
Radio. If I have a good look through the notes in my old diaries I can
come up with dozens of others that worked in Newcastle Radio in the
50's, 60's and 70's. Radio was fun in those days before accountants and
corporations found out that radio licences were a milch cow!

Besides the studio at the Newcastle Showground I also remember the 2KO
OB studios at Jesmond Centre and Kotara Fair - the punters loved it - I
know because I was one of those kids pressing his snotty nose up
against the glass! I have always wanted to worked on the wireless but
now at 59 I'm still at the bank - some would think I'm lucky I guess
looking at what has happened to the radio industry since they started
handing out BAs in Communications to idiots!

Matt Hayes was the Newcastle correspondent for Macquarie National News in
the late 1960s/early 1970s (my era!). I haven't heard his name mentioned for
many years.

Unfortunately Matt Hayes passed away some years back - I always thought
that he was both a good radio personality and journo. I once met him at
a function and I remember him being very interesting. Matt did one of
the first "open line" (talkback) programs in Newcastle radio. Talkback
radio! Wow what a radio revolution!

Ok. Here's a question. A guy called David Patterson, used to be at ABC
Newcastle 15 odd years ago, doing Weekendd Mid-Dawns. What became of
him? I liked his program and his style of music.

Also Sam Galea (2UW mid 70s)

Ah yes, Sam Galea, he managed 2SM, he took over reins in early 1988 and
dumped the Top 40 Format which according to the ratings was mostly
attracting the 10-17 age bracket and launched Lite & Easy 1269. 75% of
2SM's announcers lost their position.

At the time 2SM had the likes of: -

Peter Frank 6am to 10am
Colin Fawell 10am to 2pm
Mike Hammond 2pm to 6pm
Geoff Field 6pm to 10pm
Danny Jumpertz 10pm to 2am
Phil O'Neill / Nicky Wolf 2am to 6am.

Peter Frank was the breakfast fill in after Club Veg left through until
Lite & Easy was officially launched at Easter 1988.

Sean Pickwell was also with the station but he left just before
Christmas in 1987.

I hope I have the same bloke .. memory's more than a bit hazy now.
David died rather suddenly a decade or so ago. I think the ABC only had a
few hours notice that he'd passed away.

I recall being rung up sometime during that evening and being asked if I
could do a couple of mid-dawns, starting that night.
Whilst I was told why I been called, I was instructed not to say anything
about his death, other than that I was "covering" for him, and that the
word would go out officially "in a day or two".

Note to Harold:

Correct. David Paterson (one t) died in the '90s when doing some gigs
with ABC Newcastle. I think he was a casual because at the time he had
an interest in a Hunter Valley winery. I'm told he marketed a drop
called 'Chateau Patto'!

David had been around the traps of commercial radio since the early
'60s (2SM, 2GB, 2CH, 3DB)

It's a coincidence that his name pops up on what started as a thead for
Phil Hunter. Both men were part of the original 1963 line up of 2SM
Good Guys, though David didn't stay long. Up until that time (Sept) he
did a late night jazz program on SM. The show was once hosted by ex
ABC luminery Arch McKirdy.

Anyway it's all trivia from long, long ago. Read about soon when my
book comes out in a few weeks. There's a pic of the original Good Guys
in Chapter 4. Actually it's a drawing used to promote what was then an
exciting new concept promoting jocks on Australian music radio.

Other than Paterson and Hunter, anyone care to guess who was in that
first SM Good Guys line up of '63? A clue, there was another Phil, a
Bob, a Mike and three Johns! You might want to start it on a new
thead.

Cheers and Happy NY

To Alan of Darwin,

Yes, Doug Mulley was on WS long ago (circa '79), but the David Mulley
referred to eslewhere (no relation) is the one of 2UE/2KO fame. He was
a young jock in the '60s who became GM of 2KO for some time in the '70s
and '80s...before Wesgo bought KO in the mid '80s.

Last heard of running (owning??) a trophy shop in the Newcastle area.

yes he did marry a Newcastle girl who worked in Rayford's records. Saw him about ten years ago in Taree at a 2RE 50th anniversary day. He was not well but still cheerful.
