A JUNIOR 2SM newsreader has been caught out by an office prankster, who
switched her script, resulting in a raunchy version of an alleged
assault going live-on-air.
Audio of the newsclip from last Friday's breakfast bulletin, in which
Victoria Owens describes the attack in a Brisbane suburb, was the
centre of much mirth yesterday, when circulated widely around Sydney
via email.
In the police item, Owens says a 53-year-old woman was standing on a
street corner "when a man grabbed her on the crotch and a . . . like a
bowling ball."
Without skipping a beat, the newsreader continued to read the obviously
altered bulletin calling for public assistance.
A 2SM spokesman apologised yesterday, defending Owen - who is
well-liked and respected by her peers - for "being a pro and
continuing on with the bulletin". A distressed Owens said she "didn't
notice it was there (in her script) until it was too late. I know it's
been circulating, but I've been trying to have it stopped."
The newsreader of just 18 months was apparently set-up by former 2SM
news editor, Christine O'Maley, who had resigned and was "playing
practical jokes on her last day," a management spokesman said.
While the practice of swapping scripts or using fake names in radio
bulletins is apparently widespread, the prime time of this broadcast
pricked the ears of 2SM's radio rivals who are believed to have
circulated the broadcast "blooper".
Ironically, the bulletin was only broadcast on regional radio due to
budget cutbacks.

I thought that news readers would have to pre-read reports to check for
pronunciation etc; and query that segment. I would have given her one hell
of a bollocking if not the sack!!
I thought news readers at least edited their bulletans, so it fit
their style of reading... Obviously not.
But that was too funny though.
She probably did mate.. but then it was switched last minute.
Funny audio, has happened to all of us at one stage of our career. I
remember the boys in Lismore in my first year of radio, switched my weather
saying there was a cyclone in Parkes.
The young girl should be sacked and they should offer an aplogoy to the
woman who was attacked. How disgusting that women are now making fun
about rape victims.
Sorry if I seem like a spoil sport on this but it's just below the
belt.

O'malley is going to print i believe and i can't wait for the print
boys to do their usual new guy practice jokes on her. She might need
some new clothes after that. O'malley needs to appoligise because it
was her that edited the script. You also can't appoligise to the rape
victim by name as their are laws against identifying sexual assault
victims.
Before you start slamming 2SM I don't see many of the others taking on
the number of cadet journos that 2SM does.
Yes there was one in the post you responded to.

Yes, Bill Caralis is God's gift to journalism training... Come on, give
me a break. Have you HEARD a 2SM regional bulletin lately? It's bloody
awful!!
There are many cadet journos at 2SM because that is the cheapest way to
run the newsroom. Training doesn't come into it. It's the same as
everywhere else: on the job education, sink or swim, no mentoring
unless you know the right arse to kiss and when.
As for the joke itself, I don't consider that to be very funny. If
you're going to play a prank, at least have the sense to pick an
appropriate bulletin.
Thanks, that explains why so many of them sound like they've just left
school.
Try again. The link still works for me (as at 0300 on 1/1/07)
Bill's commented to RadioInfo, there's a story up there, could someone
with access please paste the story here? I want to know what he had to
say - although I imagine it's the usual drivel about him being some
kind of hero for 'giving kids a start' in radio and the conspiracy
against 2SM in the rest of the industry.
He should take the news room out for a team building day to build
morale... they could go ten pin bowling?
Well said
Really??? Have another listen to the audio. You can hear the enormous
smirk on Victoria's face from the very beginning of the bulletin, well
before the bowling ball line. I'm guessing it was a case of "Go on,
just read it, then blame it on me, I'm leaving".
But I can't help being a genius.
You've got about as much genius as Fitzgerald.
Have another listen to the audio you absolute dimwit. She was in on it
from the start, grow a brain.
PS: James Yelland fucks dogs.
youd be so lucky

Sack her and more like her. The latest round of radio news
presenters/reporters are atrocious especially the female type. The standard
across the board has dropped considerably.
WOAH!! Does this win the award for the most ignorant, vague, sweeping
generalisation of the year??
(Sure, it's only a week into the year, but...)
Wanna back this up with some examples or facts Pal? Because you come
across as a narrow-minded sack of shit who's been knocked back by a 2UE
reporter lately.
Also in your next post, please explain your role and contribution
within the Australian radio industry. Hopefully I'm not the only one
DYING to hear it.
I wouldn't have thought so. Ginger Breadman seems spot on to me. And
it's not just at 2SM either (where being young, female and an idiot
seem to help in getting a job). It's across the board.
And that's because the emphasis is on the wrong qualities.
Firstly, news editors are often not able to hire who they should or
want to because program directors get the final say, and go for who
sounds good, or "fits the station's sound", not realising they just
hired a bloke or gal who makes that guy from Dumb and Dumber look like
Albert Einstein.
Secondly, hiring decisions are heavily influenced by an applicant
having the "right" experience: if you have done a stint in regional
radio or at a sub-metro station, have a kick-ass demo, and know when
and how to call for a job, you'll be hired. There is little
investigation into whether or not a person can actually get the stories
(although that is maybe because radio news has turned into mainly
headlines reading, and has lost the reporting edge it once had). It's
assumed that once you have done your time elsewhere you should be able
to handle a metro newsroom.
Thirdly, metro stations especially do not train anymore. Don't count
2SM in this: they hire lots of cadets then pay them poorly and don't
give them any training in the newsroom. (And the old learn on the job,
sink or swim routine is NOT training). No, I'm talking about the ABC,
2GB and 2UE. Only 2GB seem to hire cadets nowadays, but you still have
to be young (eg: under 25) to be considered.
So don't make the mistake of thinking GB is commenting out of being
bitter and twisted.
He/she speaks the truth, Wilfred. I can vouch for it - and I am in the
media industry, so I have no axe to grind.
