Couldn't believe what I heard Kerry O'Keeffe say on the cricket during
live coverage of the Australia-Sri Lanka match yesterday on the ABC.

"Look at all the Sri Lankans in the crowd tonight - geez, you'd be hard
pressed finding a curry in Sydney tonight wouldn't you... and if Sri
Lanka win and they all get curry tonight to celebrate they'll get the
runs again tomorrow... get it... hahaha"

Imagine if someone on commercial radio said that!

geez... here's another forums dummy. if you think that is a racist
comment, then you need your head read.

what we have here is a humorous remark pointing out how well populated
their team support was in the grandstands - and a funny reference to
food of the sub-continent sometimes being a little too 'rich' for some.

get off your political bandwagon and come back down to earth.

I nearly had a heart attack laughing at Kerry's comments.

He is the best thing to hit cricket commentary in a long, long time.

Yeah I agree.
It's like remarking upon sight of a crowd of Aussies, 'you'd be hard
pressed to find a full pub in Sydney tonight'. Just a culture
observation.

Get over it.

Agree. Kerry O'Keefe would have to be one of the most entertaining
commentators in the world right now. It is funny how he polarizes the
ABC audience when he is on. Half of them piss themselves laughing at
his strange quirks, the other half listening intently to try and catch
him with a so called racist comment. I have heard Rex Hunt say things
way worse than that comment, which I have also taken in the sense of
humour.

Big fans of both.

Remember the heat put on Rexy last year with his accidental slip of the
tongue about Leon Davis of Collingwood.

I say to this day Leon Davis milked the publicity on that one saying he
was hurt by the comments... everyone knew it was a genuine mistake and
I don't think Leon knew about the comment til some loud mouth told him,
while looking for a beat-up story.

Sometimes I think we take this PC thing too far.

I remember growing up in Broady (there the proper saying PT!) where the
Teachers always told us... "Sticks and Stones may break my bones, my
names will never hurt me".

All power to Kerry O'Keefe and his fun commentary.

Looks like I stirred up something there! I was just trying to highlight
the difference between what you can get away with on commercial radio v
the ABC. The code says you cannot make comments that cause ridicule of
a person or group of people on the basis of race. Maybe I've just
worked for too many paranoid PDs, but there's no way I'd have the guts
to say something like that on radio. What about the rest of you guys
who responded - the indians are always an easy target - would you have
the guts to make a similar joke about Aboriginals?

Not too many Aboriginal cricketers running around. One that has aboriginal ancestors (Jason
Gillespie) is too big to insult in safety. ;-)
