Was it Peter Grace that was the first on-air at EON? Lee Simon was there in the
beginning as well - straight across from 3XY - and is till at MMM today.
Jennifer Keyte was an early EON news presenter. Gavin Wood and Molly Meldrum
did breakfast during the early 80's. John Peters ex-3XY did nights at EON/MMM
including his "Top 8 at 8".
> What were the other Triple M's called before they were Triple M?
4MMM has always been 4MMM but before identifying as "Triple M" they were "FM
104 - Rock In Stereo".
5MMM was originally 5KA (1197 AM), then 5KKA "KAFM 104.7" and then
Village/Austereo took it over and bought the 5MMM callsign from the community
station that had that name (which is now 5DDD?).
6MMM I think was 6NOW "96FM". Now it is "96FM" again on-air but i'm not sure
what the official callsign is, is it still 6MMM?

The only time I recall hearing Mulray on 3MMM was on the first day of
"Rocktober" one year when we got his breakfast show in Melbourne for the
occasion.
Enjoy!

Lee Simon was a panel operator at 3AW when I worked there from 1969 to 1972.
He was known as Leo Simon then - but I think that was a shortened version of
his family name.
Lee pulled up beside me once in Commercial Road, Prahran. He was driving a
sleek sports car. I was driving a tram! But he recognised me in an instant
and we exchanged pleasantries! It would have been 1975.
Paul in Melbourne (former radio journalist, former tram driver and perhaps
soon to be former public servant!)

Somebody (whose father was quite famous as well) once told me
about those early days at EON where you used to be able to rock
in to work with your own LP's/CD's under your arm and play them,
such was the level of trust afforded the hosts then in the quest for
musical "purity" on the then new (to commercial broadcasting) FM
band.
Thank goodness consultants et al drove a stake through the heart
of that tangent of independent and asinine behaviour chop-chop
lickety split, before it infested the industry.

I can tell you that the first person on air at EON FM (later Triple M)
was Peter Grace. The first song played was "New Kid In Town" by the
Eagles.
When the conversion to Triple M was made, The D-Gen were on air, at an
OB in South Melbourne and Glenn Wheatley threw the switch and the
first song played on Triple M was "New Sensation" by INXS.
In 1992/1993/part of 1994
Triple M Sydney was
Breakfast : Doug Mulray with Sammy Powers
Mornings : Stuart Cranney
Afternoons: Trevor Smith
Drive : Ron E Sparks
Nights : John Kennedy

In Feb was very interesting, bit of hip hop and dance hidden amongst
the classics you don't hear enough of these days on 2MMM or 3MMM. A
little new stuff that I only heard on K Rock - those songs mightnt've
set the researchers on fire, but from a listener/personal prefrence
point of view - it's great to have an another choice for rock. And
Mobbsy must be a Geelong institution by now :)

Fixed your typo Marcus..
Totally. Geelong also has a lot less stations than other cities of a similar
size.
