Just to advise that I have just picked up my first digital radio.
Our Bedside clock radio needed replacing so I lashed out $199 at Hardly
Normal for the Pure Siesta DAB/FM clock radio.

It may not be Pure HIFI, but it does the job admirably, and 3AW is
crystal clear, so Mrs Artie is happy too.

Good for Mrs S. She can hear the lazy Keith MacGowan overnight so
much clearer now. A horrible thought.

Nice to do a rescan yesterday and find the five ABC networks all there
as promised.

It's pretty amazing that the ABC Radio promos for digital radio are so
much better than those dreadful short (timewise and on information)
ads that the commercial stations have played ad infinitum.

The Philistine responds:

Myer Perth have recently introduced a few of the Pure DAB+ range - the
Chronos clock radio $249, the Chronos CD clock radio $399, and the basic
model which is made some funky kind of eco-plastic $249. Discount have been
applied in some stores.

I have been testing the Sangean Internet & DAB+ radio and I must say I am
very very impressed with the internet WIFI connectivity of this unit. It
cost over $600 retail. If it were $300 I would buy it immediately and I
think I'd spend most of my time listening to the internet stations. There
is so much from which to choose and the audio quality is exceptional. It is
just a really good model, arguably the best of its kind. The Pure Chronos
CD is also a nice looking unit with great functionality.

My vote would be that the car DAB+ radio, which is windshield mounted, will
be popular, as will the IPOD dock system when it appears on market stores.

It would seem the DIGITAL RADIO isn't the biggest thing since sliced
bread.

But it's OK, as far as I'm concerned.

It's wonderful to hear 3MP and Magic again in hi-fi stereo.

And also hear Tony Delroy continue "The Challenge" when 3LO1 (what do
we call it?) goes to the cricket for a number of boring hours.

It appears that all major ABC Radio sport will ultimately be on
digital on the designated "ABC Grandstand" channel.

Nothing wrong with that. And maybe there's bandwidth there for ABC
Grandstand 1 and ABC Grandstand 2.

Looking forward to physically seeing you all at the Official Digital
Radio Launch at Melbourne's Fed Square (5:30 to 9:00 am) this
Thursday, or figuratively at the other capital city launches.

The powers that be haven't launched DAB+ very well ... but it will
succeed! Just as digital TV has ... (as Manuel would say) ...
h'eventually.

The 0530 to 0900 slot is just for the ABC's contribution to the day in
Melbourne. Other broadcasters, including the SBS, will get the
opportunity to get on the Fed Square stage after 0900.

To further clarify, or muddy, the story ... it seems that all the
Melbourne digital stations will be doing their breakfast programs at Fed
Square, not just the ABC.
See the advert on http://www.digitalradioplus.com.au/ for other
locations around Australia.

I'm thinking about heading into Fed Square in Melbourne on Thursday
Morning to see this.

According to SEN 1116 there's digital radios to be won as well - could
be worth the trouble :)

Be there or be square!

In yesterday's Oz Media supplement there was mention of a new iRiver
B30 portable DAB+ radio with MP3/4 player being on show for a
recommended retail price of $229. That's not bad value for something
completely new to the market.

It seems to me that ABC Radio is promoting digital radio much more
than the commercial stations. Mainly because they'd love to be able
to provide a much better and diverse service. The trouble for them is
the finance.

The commercial stations are going through the motions simply because
they have to. Otherwise we would have had another bunch of new
stations (ie. commercial completion) introduced ... as was the case
with the launch of commercial FM in 1980.

Did the government (either version) get it right?

No - not by a long shot. Digital radio should have been launched in
Oz at the same time as digital TV.

But it's finally arrived, even with the little fanfare that will occur
on Thursday.

It's at least a fair bit different to the secretive introduction on AM
stereo in 1985, which pretty much remained secretive.

DIGITAL RADIO IS HERE. AND IT SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD.

Let's embrace it!

If we do ... there will be so many more opportunities for listeners to
enjoy more diverse live and local radio programs.

What I want to know is ... where are all the jobs? Are we just going to
see simulcasts of existing stations, ad infinitum, with the music
stations continuing their automated playouts, or is the industry going to
grasp this opportunity and run with it, creating new content (and more
jobs) along the way?

NO it Does Not, it's no better than what was already in place.

R.E.
LETS NOT, lets embrace 80 to 100 digital channels of equal power and
coverage in every market, then their might be some new jobs.

Not with this corrupt system in place, you are not going to get anything.

Check out the iRiver B30 here ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kL_aYj7Gum8

From another site ...

At least in our office, radio reception was, to be brutally honest, an
enormous pile of crap. But it can be good, so long as you get a good
signal (and the B30 has a telescopic aerial to help). Radio stations
are presented on-screen in a list, and both DAB+, FM and indeed your
own voice can be recorded directly to the player's memory. Note that
for voice, there's a built-in microphone.

My report to my friends at the AM Stereo Forum ...

I went to Federation Square in the city this morning at 7:00 am - as
all of
Melbourne's commercial, ABC, and SBS stations were broadcasting their
breakfast sessions from temporary booths at Melbourne's "official"
launch of
Digital Radio. I thoroughly enjoyed it. In the main "tent" there were
about 30 different models of DAB+ radios available for sale here in
Oz!

It wasn't hugely successful. Probably about 2000 interested people
were
there. But it was a darned sight better than the intro of AM stereo in
1985.

And there was one little unit that just looks right for me. An iRiver
(new
brand to me) "walkman" that also has 8Gb for storing mp3 files - so a
DAB+
radio and iPod all in one. I listened to it for about 25 minutes and
Magic
and 3MP sounded wonderful on it.

And better still, Sangean has another cheaper DAB+ "walkman" due out
in
October.

My wishes are seemingly coming true. I can now see that DAB+ is going
to
be a feature of Oz radio at least for the medium term. Two of the
successful British suppliers, Roberts and Pure, are here, as are
Yamaha,
iRiver, Bush, Grundig, and (God love them) Sangean.

Eat your heart out Sony!!

Maybe I'm biased, but I believe that Oz has selected the best system
for the
future. We are ahead of most countries with DAB+. If this system is
let
loose in Japan and Korea there simply will be no looking back.
