Mix 102.3 Adelaide: has 5AD changed format and identity?

Listening to 5AD over while travelling over Easter, I noticed most of the
IDs were for "Mix 102.3 FM" with only an occasional "5AD" (twice per hour if
I got it correct).
The music format was adult contemporary rather than the "easy listening"
format I heard on my last visit to the Adelaide area.
There was a letter to the editor of the Sunday Mail on 15 April complaining
about the sudden departure of announcers Jeff Sunderland and John Dean so I
gather the change is fairly recent. I also noticed there was less news on
5AD than I recall previously.
Would this change be part of the move away from easy listening formats that
has been mentioned from time to time in this newsgroup?
Paul in Melbourne.

About 4 weeks ago. 5AD, Adelaide's Easy Mix (used to be "easy listening
5ad") (They included the "mix" word at the beginning of the year, went down
really well... Anyway, they fired two announcers who were both at the age of
60.

1. Geoff Sunderland, formerly the highest paid announcer in Adelaide. He was
host of a trio "Sundo's Big Breakfast, with Glenn and Jana (a much younger
pair). A week before he was fired, it became "The Big Breakfast" and Friday
he was given his termination notice. [The irony is that the next tuesday the
ratings came out and 'sundo's big breakfast had jumped 1.5 % points!] Just
left Glenn and Jana.

2. John Dean, who had been doing a combination of mornings and afternoons
together, a little under 60 I believe, and had been at 'AD for 10 years or
so, was fired on the same day. Replaced by a younger announcers. [Irony is
his shift had jumped 2% points I believe]

This directive came from your mob in Sydney and Melbourne. I think after the
success of TTFM in Melbourne. Before they concentrated on a "Easy listening"
but they had AC as well, they were really all over the place. (See three
years ago 5AD were no 1 by a country mile). But SA-FM (Austereo) had a war
chest and knocked them off the top position.

After the two oldies, they became MIX 102 5AD... I suspect soon enough they
will drop 5AD. Just they would face a huge backlash if they eliminated the
5AD straight away (5AD being one of Adelaide's oldest stations) and older
Adelaidians get very, very stroppy at the thought of shows coming out of
Sydney and Melbourne.

5AD decision is to really become a TTFM in melbourne. I wouldn't be suprised
if they started networking shows from them.

In regards to their news: Yes now they begin with "Stories we are following
this hour"...a very austero sound.

Also remember that 'AD is part of duopoly with 5DN (a talk station). They
have taken the heavy news focus, and also they re-hired Jeff Sunderland
(probably at a much lower rate). So they probably poach they disgruntled
older end of the market.

I hope this answers your questions Paul.

The new American (Clear Channel) Network PD (whose name is not really known
in this country) has a reall issue with the "easy" format. He has changed it
in Sydney as well as Adelaide, and to my mind NOT for the better. Great
announcers like Bogart Torrelli and Trevor Sinclair have been reduced to
doing very little on-air across the at-work day parts, and when they do talk
it's only weather and liners. Waste of talented broadcasters if you ask me.
These were people who really communicated with the local audience, and were
#1 with target audience (according to AMT). Seems the yanks only know how to
program a jukebox!

I'm sure Allan Furst has been sent here with a job description that even he
may not totally agree with but has been decided by his seniors. Don't shoot
the messenger necessarily, also don't tar a whole nationality with the same
brush just because you don't agree with the programming philosophies of one
US broadcasting organization. It may shock you to know that many US
broadcasting companies also disagree with the business and programming
practices of Clear Channel Communications

It's "easy" to point the finger when it looks obvious, but there's a whole
lot going on in the big picture that we will never be aware of..

Having said that, I agree with your comments, that 2 very talented
communicators are no longer allowed to work to their full potential.

"Resistance is futile! We will add the benefits of your labor to our
collective. You will now service eight or more stations in exchange
for subsistence level income. The needs (for money) of the few (in
control), far outweigh the needs of the many (not in control). Welcome
to the collective. You will service us. resistance is futile!"

I'm so sorry that our country has spawned this horrible cancer...

Further to previous postings:

Thanx for the answer Cyberponcho.

I'm glad you agree in the latter Mr Grealy, in my tarring of a whole nation
I was simply referring to Clear Channel's maor ownership dominance in
America.
I noticed today that both Bogart Torrelli and Trevor Sinclair are now adding
their own personality to Station I.Ds and Station Promo Liners. It sounded
great!

Perhaps things at MIX106.5 have changed again and the jukebox it was
generating for the past couple of weeks is no more. Hopefully Mr Furst
realised he was wasting 2 of this cities best music radio talents.

By the way I'd love to hear Bogart and Trevor working as a duo, they are
both so smooth in their presentation, I reckon they'd complement each other
beautifully.
