These people who report traffic on Sydney radio all have one thing in
common, read below and see if you can get it before I give the answer.

Jason Bowman: 9inety6ix.1
Brian Sanders: Triple M (Breakfast)
David Archer: Has been heard on 9inety6ix.1 (under the name of Rotor Boy)
and on 2GB and 2SM
Marcus Paul: Currently filling in for Jason Bowman on 9inety6ix.1, has also
been heard on 2WS and MIX 106.5
Kerry Denten: I heard him this arvo on 2WS, he also does Saturday arvo's on
2SM.
(Answer below)

They are all ex announcers on the old ONE FM 96.1 (now 9inety6ix.1), with
about 4 of them on air at the time ONE FM was 2KA (before 1992) in fact,
Kerry Denten was the first announcer on ONE FM when it converted to FM in
1992. It beats me why all these good broadcasters ended up as traffic
reporters. Any ideas?

I have asked myself this same question quite a few times. I have so far
escaped becoming a traffic reporter but it is amazing how it has all ended
up. I figure most didn't want to leave Sydney (why would you) and there are
probably 5-10 less announcing positions in Sydney than there were a few
years ago.

I am beginning to think ONE FM employment is now a pre-requisite of the
Australian Traffic Network and the rest :-)

Natasha Grey does Sea FM/2GO. These are owned by the same company and operate
out of the same building anyway. The newsreaders are also very clever, doing two
different bulletins at the same time each hour. Same with the surf reporter. I
think some announcers may even work between stations.

And I agree - I was sure it was the same voice I heard on 2KO coming back from
the north coast one afternoon, though I think she gave a different name. Funny
how good the sound quality is for someone sitting in a noisy helicopter though!

Made me wonder, how does she cover Pennant Hills in Sydney to north of Newcastle
in the 2GO chopper/Sea FM Seaplane/Newcastle whatever it is.

Her name is "Lucy in the Sky" - and you're correct, she does Central
Coast Radio too, or last timed I listened she did :-)

Oh Paul! You have to be joking, aren't you??

I have lived and worked in Sydney (I still own a house is Balmain), heck I
even grew up in Sydney and there is no way.... NO WAY! I would like to live
there again.

Give me the rural area's anyday!!

We had Wayne Roberts do a traffic report when he was out here once. His
words, "Look there's a car driving down the street!"

Hi Guys,

My wife and I had a real laugh reading your posts about the
traffic reporters because it must seem that way in regard to ex-
ONE-FM jocks. I have only just returned to commercial radio
after a seven year hiatus and I'm having a blast. I have more
work than I can handle and it's good to be back. As much as
there are some problems with Sydney radio right now, there is a
definite buzz in the industry.

I'm only filling in on 2WS for John Kezby who's on holidays
right now, but let me tell you how we do what we do ...

I spend at least two hours each morning and about 90 minutes
each afternoon in a Bell Jet Ranger helicopter while two of our
other reporters (Natasha Gray and Ian Holland) are in a Piper
Cherokee each. Ian and I cover the greater Sydney area from the
Northern Beaches to the Blue Mountains and down as far as
Sutherland while Natasha travels as far as Newcastle and
basically flies over Newcastle and the Central Coast for about
an hour of her shift and the rest of her time is spent reporting
on traffic from Bankstown Airport through to Hornsby and the F3
both on her way up and back.

We also have two reporters in an office tower in North Sydney
keeping an eye on the Gladesville, ANZAC, Iron Cove and Harbour
Bridges along with the Western Distributor through binoculars
and another reporter co-ordinating things on the ground at
Bankstown. We each stay in close contact with one another via
two-way radio and share information constantly. Natasha reports
to Jason who in turns broadcasts to Newcastle. The 2WS listeners
are highly interactive with the program too. We receieve a huge
amount of calls from WS listeners either direct to the Traffic
Hotline number or radioed to us by Hans and Kaylie's assistant
or Bob Peters direct. Often the PD from 2WS will call with info
he's seen first hand.

In addition, we have a direct network feed to our computers from
the Traffic Management Centre plus the NSW Ambulance Service
contact us the moment an accident occurs that they are called to
attend.

All in all, it's a pretty thorough system and very little info
slips through the cracks.

.. and there you have it.

Kerry

I know for a fact that all of the traffic reporters congregate in one office
playing Microsoft Flight Simulator at full blast for the sound effects and
listen to scanners for the traffic information.

Well, Clive told me that, anyway. ;-)

Hehehe, back in the late 80's - early 90's when I was doing the
traffic thing for KZ/Gold, I worked solely in the studio pulling
the data out of the early VicRoads freeway feed via Viatel
(remember that), and co-ordinating reports from regular
listeners that had car phones. Must say it all worked pretty
well, but one day we did the helicopter thing. I sat there doing
my report whilst Peter McInnes did chest-thumping helicopter SFX
in the background.

Must say it sounded pretty stoopid....

This is Artie Arterial signing off.
