2CC have further cluttered their already over cluttered pre-news promos
with an announcement that they are celebrating 30 years of
broadcasting.

I always thought they had been around for longer than that, but
apparently not. They haven't mentioned the date of their 30th birthday,
but that would mean cutting out the "This news brought to you by"
promo, and they aren't going to do that.

This calls for Wayne Mac to come out of the woodwork - Wayne??? He's
probably busy with his book, hurry up, my money for the book is burning
a hole in my pocket and my coffee table is looking lonely. :)

Thanks Andrew.

Yes, I would be interested to know how the book is going...I notice
Artie has linked to it from the AIR News site www.air-news.net

>From memory, 2CC became "The new home for John Laws in the morning" in
1995 which really seemed to spark their move to talkback, I remember
being a regular caller on "David Young's Garden" when it first started.

For the record, I listened to 2CC from 1990/1991 (Can't remember which)
to mid-1999.
Switched to 2CA in mid-1999 and went back to 2CC in mid-2003, where I
have stayed since.

My dial does move about a bit, but those stations are my regular
stations. Enough of my banter...

I was first introduced to 2CC while on holiday in Canberra. It was 1986 and
the jingles used seemed to be modelled on those also used by Melbourne's Fox
FM. Back then, there was no commercial FM in Canberra.

By 1988, the station had been re-branded 'Classic Hits 2CC', along with
sister stations 3TT Melbourne and 2UW Sydney. The station ran the same
'Classic Hits of Summer' jingle and campaign that so successfully brought
3TT Melbourne into the commercial mainstream.

Even after FM 104.7 was introduced, 2CC remained competitive, more
successful than even its own FM stable-mate Kix 106 FM. I recall press ads
in Ad News and/or B&T that boasted 2CC's 'adult' credentials.

Things turned sour for 2CC on much the same ratings terms as Melbourne's
3MP. The similarity being that both stations introduced second stations that
were pitched too closely to their existing format. The effect was the same
in both cases:

Magic 693 cannibalised 3MP's market share, while 'The New 106.3 Canberra FM'
cannibalised 2CC's adult audience (Canberra FM eventually was renamed Mix
106.3 - otherwise perhaps the market would have been confused if the name
was directly changed from Kix to Mix instead of done in phases. A direct
change would have warranted some sort of promotion with the words 'hearing
test' in the title :)

No doubt cannibalisation is a difficulty that DMG in Melbourne and Sydney
will hope to steer clear from.

At about the same time (mid-90s), both 2CC and 3MP exited major radio
networks and have since been operated by niche market owners, and getting
niche market audiences.

Both stations probably also share the same fortunes in having the most
potential to gain from Digital broadcasting.

Yes, 3MP is trying to claw back some of its previous ratings glory with a
"new" music mix. In fact it didn't sound too bad so I thought, what the
heck, oldtmers like me probably have AM stereo radios, why don't they switch
their stereo encoder back on - so I wrote to them and asked why not? Well,
no reply. Come on 3MP, if you really want to win back an audience, how hard
is it to reply (even negatively) to a wriiten enquiry? As it is, even
though Magic693 is in mono while their stereo exciter is under repair, I'll
probably stick with them...

I 'bought' a few cuts from Mike Brady's 1985 FOX package primarily the
weather donut which we played on the half hour. Ii cost me a nice
bottle of Scotch for Bissell (PD of FOX then). All very civilised.
Man, we had fun talking up with those weather jingles! Mobbs, tell 'em
the story about Phil Lynch's first night on air at CC.

WM:
True, it did go Classic Hits in '88. But did you know it was to be
re-launched as an Easy Listening station? True story: the TVCs were
made, music was carted, the promo van repainted. A few of us have even
got the collectors item car stickers which never made it into the
market.

Yes, you're right about the competitiveness of CC against the new FMs
(KIX and the 2CA owned 104) but I can't agree that there was a problem
between KIX and CC. They were very different sounding stations even
though they lived under one roof. They were run with different teams
and attitudes. CC was all pop and gold - very family friendly whereas
KIX was hard rock and blokey - probably our downfall really, but hell
we had fun for a little while!

What brought the place undone in my view was the decision to network
that ARN Classic Gold shite from Sydney in the early '90s. Easy for me
to say. I was long gone by then. CC was left to rot on the vine while
they (ARN) put their energies into FM. Can't blame em, but the
networking was definitly death knell of the 'old' (Pre Blyton) 2CC.

Now that's it for me. I have a book to get out. Catch ya later.

heheh

re the weather 'top and tail'carts.
Phil Lynch ( top guy, who went on to call bball at the Olympics etc) was
following me on Mddawns.
I explained to him how the new weather jingles worked ...
Play the first one, rap the weather over the bed.. then hit the closer ...
eg. "Canberras Weather .... (bed rolls) READ WEATHER ... at end hit the closer
"2CC!"

anyways I set Phil up and schlepp off home...

fanging down the Gungahlin Highway I hear Phil start the weather ..
Opener rolls.. "Canberras Weather .... then music.... music... music...
music... music...music... (seems like forever).. then more music then at END
of the 2min music bed....on comes Phil.. "yes and Canberras weather for the
ACT.. fine blah blah blah blah ...."

anyways you had to have been there ..

i remember cacking myself and nearly stacking my HR into a pole...

slam dunk to the Philster !

I wonder what Phil is doing these days. I would imagine that he would
have been the most devastated when Prime News just disappeared from the
TV, ending his long time gig as sport presenter.

Oddly enough, I remember the last thing him saying on Prime News was
that they would have results from the GMC400 motor racing tomorrow.

Shame what a mess 2CC is today. Seems to have been a brilliant station
back in its day - such a shitfight now.

I agree Mediaspy. CC once a VERY good station and I'm proud to have
been a part of it. But the party doesn't last forever. It can't. I
think radio stations are quite like football teams. Over the years:
players change, the game changes, the world changes!

With that in mind it makes perfect sense that stations like 2CC, and
their AM brethren elsewhere, think: 2SM, 3XY, 4IP, 5AD, 6PM etc have
either changed, are 'no more', or in the case of SM...well, I can't
even bring myself to recognise the Caralis Pyrmont-based station as
being '2SM'. It's not the 2SM I once knew. Personally, I wish they'd
give it another name.

Mac
