Hi all,
I was asked to cast my eye over a Yaesu FT1000 MP that had a fault - no TX
or RX between 14.50000 and 21.99999 MHz on the main receiver. However, this
fault could affect other or multiple bands on the main receiver too.

The problem with this one was on the main Local Oscillator board, VCO3 - in
the VCO there's a typical FET, Coil, cap and varicap combination. All
components are wave soldered. It appears as if the wave soldering for the
through-the-hole components, especially the larger diameter wire as used by
the VCO coils, is inadequate, and leads to dry 'crowning' type solder
joints - especially the ground or 'cold' end of the coils in each VCO.
The fix is simple - remove the solder for each leg of the coil, one leg at a
time, and carefully resolder.

I expect this problem to become prevalent in FT1000s, as it appears
systematic of the assembly process of these radios. Hope it helps a few
FT1000 owners out there in future.

Thanks - Jason

I have the identical problem on my FT-1000MP. I had identified the
failure as the 1st LO but thanks to your posting I was able to go
directly to the source of the problem. Thank you for your posting. It
saved me a good deal of poking about.
