| I have a marine ICOM M700 (AUS) HF Transceiver and would like to add the
| CW/USB/LSB switch which has been removed from the Australian version.
May we know why? It would void its type-approval, of course; it was
probably removed for a reason.

Dave,
You are quite right. It was removed for simplicity of operation
because the marine HF frequencies are, I believe, all USB simplex and
duplex for ship to ship and ship to shore operation. This along
with the locked 48 marine frequencies probably gives it its
type-approval. Although, the local agent will, for a fee, program it to
any channel you desire.
This, for Australia, simplifies the licensing so that people like
myself can hold a Restricted Operators License for the purpose of
utilising the predifined marine frequencies without having to sit for the
HAM Operators License.
However, in addition to the marine frequencies I need receive
access to encoded Weather and Navigation information which is transmitted
on non- marine frequencies (ie 5.100Mhz). Most boats carry a Marine HF
and either a HAM radio or HF receiver to give them this access. I would
rather carry one set which gives me access to marine channels and
weather/Nav information. The M700 has the capability, so why not use it?
As you can see, there is nothing dark and sinister here, I am
merely trying to make do with the equipment at hand rather than duplicate
functionality. - Boat space is precious.
