I'll admit I'm one of those amateurs who doesn't want to get into the
minutia of electronics. As such when problems like the following
arrive I'm happy to send my gear away for repairs.

The digital display on my TS130S often jumps around a lot. EG when
slowly tuning up the dial around 3.600, the display will jump from
3.600 to 6.835 or 9.587 or some other random number, then back to
3.610 (where you’d expect it to be ) and then up to some other random
number then back to 3.612 etc etc. The actual frequency isn’t jumping
though because the signals are sounding like they are unchanged. It
does it on all bands

To me, this problem sounds like something needs cleaning where the
digital/led display data gets encoded.

So two questions....

I'm going to have a go at just giving the rig a thorough clean but
where in particular could this fault be originating from?

If it doesn't fix it, who/where is a reputable repairer for these
older rigs? I'm in VK5 so here or Vic would be good.

Yours,

Dene

G'day Dene

I am far from a radio tech but I have owned a number of 130's and they
all seem to have their common faults that being dry joints, from what
I have heard (from techs) is the time these rigs were built the solder
used had a very high tin content making solder joints very hard and
brittle and susceptible to cracking.

I had countless troubles with all of mine and every time it turned out
to be dry joints or poor earthing to the chassis on pll board
especially, I am positive someone would be able to throw some light on
that particular problem i had a similar problem in one of mine but the
display only momentarily dimmed and come back again eventually i found
what was causing it and it was the all to common dry joint.

I am not on the internet as such but there is a very good qualified
tech in vk5 in Glenelg that has a good rep, i do have his phone # but
will not put it on here i am sure someone will pop up on this thread
who knows who i am referring to and will have Ian’s number and pass it
on to you, I would email it to you but my address book is at home,
anyway good luck with it all Dene.

Regards- Stu

" I am not on the internet as such" meaning I am not on the
internet :eg Do not have an internet connection, check my email when i
can, not interested in the internet, It was not my intention to make
such a highly complex and hard to grasp statement hopefully it makes
sense now Paul.

Hello all: I have heard that the Kenwood transceivers like the ts-130 have an issue with solder joints that do not make connection ... I have two TS-130 and neither work. I hope it is a problem with some solder joint that I can correct with my soldering iron. But after taking out one of the boards, all the solder joints "look" ok. Does anyone have a suggestion how to identify a solder joint that is faulty? Thanks George Willingmyre K3szz.
