St Augustine's Anglican Church puts stop to red light activity in its garage

PROSTITUTES have been using a Woodville Gardens church garage to solicit
men.
Father Graham Head said the St Augustine of Canterbury Anglican Church was
aware for some time that women had been using the grounds surrounding the
church for the illegal activity.
Father Head said the tenant, who is now being evicted, denied all knowledge
of the activity. He did not suggest she was involved but said she was given
an eviction notice in April so the house can be used by the church.
"We certainly had asked the tenant if they knew anything about it," Father
Head said.
"There is prostitute activity in the area. They are using the grounds of the
house. It has been reported to police over the years.
"I don't think there's too many streets around here that are not affected.
It's very concerning and unsavoury.
"I feel sorry for the residents in the area."
The St Augustine's Anglican Church is on the corner of Danvers Grove and
Eighth Avenue, only a short distance from Hanson Rd, which is well known for
prostitute activity.
The garage, which has a crude bed on the floor, is behind the church at the
back of a church-owned house.
There has been little effort made to secure the garage, the tenant said, and
neighbours say their calls to have it demolished have been ignored.
The tenant, who did not wish to be named, said she had been at the property
for 14 years and received no explanation of why she was being evicted.
"I know girls were coming into the back garden and I know they were using
the shed," she said.
"I turned a blind eye to it. I have sympathy for the girls.
"I've seen cars pulling up and I don't know what's going on. I've seen the
girls in the church doorways with men.
"Nobody has spoken to me about it at all. I was just asked to vacate the
property."
