It is when you consider that the 3% (or whatever they end up getting)
is useless on it's own. It has to be co-ordinated with around
47% to be of any use.
So, while the Democrats couldn't argue "We have a mandate!", they
can certainly argue "The Senate has a mandate, and a majority of
the Senate is against the GST". Assuming for a moment that a
majority of the Senate is against, of course.
>Remember what the Senates REAL job is??????????????
>Go do your home work...
To represent the States. But then the REAL job of the Reps
is to represent the electorate, and they haven't been doing
much of that for years. We all know that both Senators and
MHR's represent their Party, not their electorate.
On to the predictions...

I'm guessing that ON will pick up a Senate spot or two, but nothing
in the Reps - scoring seats in the Reps requires either a really big
national support level (plus a large flow of preferences), or high
levels of localized support (probably with preferences again).
I'm not convinced that ON has either (their localized support
is split with the Nationals).
That will most likely leave the Democrats with the balance of
power mid next year.

>THERE IS TAX ON FOOD NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>WHY SCRAP IT?????????????????????
There's some tax on some food, yes. The point at which it is levied
is the important bit IMO (WST is levied on the wholesale price,
GST on the retail price - so it is perfectly possible for the WST
on an item, while being at a higher %age rate, to have a lower
dollar value than GST on the same item - depends a lot on how high
the WST rate on that item is, and how big a difference there is
between the wholesale and retail prices).
IMO it is much more likely that the Liberals will do a deal with
the Democrats, and get the GST through sans basic food.
As to the ALP and NSW - Bob Carr is Kim Beazley's biggest
liability IMO. Gareth is merely amusing, Carr outright
pisses off a lot of people.
(Can anyone tell that I'd vote for One Nation if I thought
it'd help finish off Carr?)

The problem with Carr is that he's so two-faced. He pretends to
be a leftie, but he's really more like Kennet. I may not like everything
Kennet has done, but at least he isn't pretending to be someone else.

Perhaps even earlier Matt. Due to a vagary in our electoral system,
senators from the Territories take their seats in the first session of
Parliament after the election, not in July like the rest. So, if Rick
Farley (the Democrat candidate) wins (meaning Margaret Reid loses her
Liberal spot), the Democrats will have the balance of power right away.

Yes, I'm aware of this, but it's still a bit of a long shot. If
it works, then Howard is not going to be a happy camper, but despite
all the "if we win by 1 seat in the Reps, the Senate oughta do
whatever we tell them" rubbish, he'll probably end up doing a deal
with the Dems and getting the GST through.
Hm. Perhaps the refusal to consider exempt food from the GST is
part of an ambit claim? Makes a certain amount of sense, actually.

On the money...the media says a 6-12 majority(they have the benefit of
hindsight)
The bit I really missed was that the ALP could win the majority of the
people but lose the election. But big boys don't sook..the Democrats and
ALP can use their Senate mandate to implement the will of the people. ;-)

(as will most likely be the case with our GST) is that an awful
lot of people will do whatever they can to dodge it. It is,
after all, something of a national pastime - I wonder if we can
get it included in the Olympics?

When it comes to VAT, food and Europe remember Europe already has a defacto
tax on food called the Common Agricultural Policy. This makes food more
expensive. It would be a bit much even for the European welfare state to
impose another tax on food.
