If I close my BigPond account, will I still be able to receive emails sent
via the telstra.com webmail service?
Tech support don't seem to understand what I'm asking.

NO - you will lose your email address if you close your account

Get a Yahoo address or run your own domain name and that way you can
change ISP without having to change your email address

The only way to keep a "free" email account with them I can see is if you
have a dialup account with them, and also a broadband account, they will let
that dialup account go on a "501" plan and that allows that account to stay
open for emails. If it is on hold, then it will die.

When I closed my Bigpond account they asked if I wanted to keep my
associated Telstra.com address at no ongoing charge.

Yep, Yahoo kicks ass !
Has a decent spam filter and good interface.
Mostly reliable too when you need to use it.

Why would they offer something for nothing ?
This is Telstra we are talking about :-)

My Bigpond Home account was closed on Feb 19th (which was on the Account
hold plan previously). This account was linked to my telstra.com webmail
account. Since the termination date I have still been able to succesfully
send email to BOTH my bigpond.com and telstra.com email addresses.
I just confirmed this is still the case 15 minutes ago by sending email to
the bigpond address and it appeared on my telstra.com webmail service
shortly thereafter (and my phone was sent an SMS alert).
Therefore you should not lose your bigpond.com OR telstra.com email address
if you close your bigpond home account. (Assuming the telstra.com and
bigpond.com accounts were linked PRIOR to your bigpond home termination
request).

Hope this helps.

The only worry is Telstra claim that delinquent email Accounts that are not
attached to a a paying plan will be axed after may 1st.

Thanks kubalister,

Which of course conflicts with Telstra's reply!

I was expecting that the bigpond.com address would be cancelled, but it is
still operational. This may however be an interim bonus so one can't expect
it to continue indefinitely. They don't officially support the old account
as an alias so it could be removed at any time in the future.
I suspect it won't be necessary to do so since both addresses use the same
mailbox on the same mail server. Whatever happens, you'll still have the
telstra.com address but treat the bigpond.com address as a short term bonus.

I had an internet site with iprimus that survived for almost 7 months
after I left them.

Yes you can. When you close your account, request that they keep the
telstra.com component of it open. You'll have to wait in their billing
queue to do this though, it can't be done on the page they setup to
cancel your account online.

Do you have a current telstra account or an account on hold? If you have the
latter, you should have got an email AND a letter in the post telling how
they will axe dormant accounts on May 1st. This also includes email accounts
that are not attached to a paying dialup or broadband account.

You can opt to keep the telstra.com component of your account open.
