NO - you will lose your email address if you close your account
Get a Yahoo address or run your own domain name and that way you can
change ISP without having to change your email address

The only way to keep a "free" email account with them I can see is if you
have a dialup account with them, and also a broadband account, they will let
that dialup account go on a "501" plan and that allows that account to stay
open for emails. If it is on hold, then it will die.

Yep, Yahoo kicks ass !
Has a decent spam filter and good interface.
Mostly reliable too when you need to use it.

Why would they offer something for nothing ?
This is Telstra we are talking about :-)
Hope this helps.

The only worry is Telstra claim that delinquent email Accounts that are not
attached to a a paying plan will be axed after may 1st.
Which of course conflicts with Telstra's reply!
---------------------------
You will still be able to access e-mail addressed to
xx...@telstra.com via Webmail when you close your account.
However, any e-mail addressed to xx...@bigpond.com will get returned
to the sender with an error.

I had an internet site with iprimus that survived for almost 7 months
after I left them.
Yes you can. When you close your account, request that they keep the
telstra.com component of it open. You'll have to wait in their billing
queue to do this though, it can't be done on the page they setup to
cancel your account online.

Do you have a current telstra account or an account on hold? If you have the
latter, you should have got an email AND a letter in the post telling how
they will axe dormant accounts on May 1st. This also includes email accounts
that are not attached to a paying dialup or broadband account.
