Hi all,

I am looking for an old NSW BBS List from circa 1992. They used to have the
filename "BBSFNSW.TXT"

the Aussie BBS web pages that hosts the file you are looking for, was
pretty easy to find on any search engine. so it looks like the site
no longer exists.

however i am pretty sure i have a CD with the BBS lists on it. want
me to find it??

I have one off 'Prophet' from about that era on floppy somewhere but unless
you can give me DAMNED good reason I ain't even gonna try and find it.

By less than a few years later most of them had gone under anyway. Stuffin
useless internet.

BTW _-*IF*-_ I can find the disc it probably has the whole AU list, and my
old fido mail stuff,,, but seriously, I'd have to figure out where first,
and then hope that those discs aren't screwed.

I have _some_ old PC mag CD's, but I tossed most of them a damned good while
ago,,, I'll check if there's any old ones. (note: I really do think it's
worthwhile but totally out of the question for mags like APC to have
searchable archives of stuff this old)

The aus BBS list is somewhat smaller these days, thats for sure, example, there
are 25 systems in the current Victorian BBS list (guess I should call trhem all
to make sure they are still all active!!)
Best prg for dialing to a BBS (under windows) is probably ZOC

I took a wander down memory lane the other day myself, dragging out my backup
of my BBS and looking at various things.

I also found a current zone 3 FidoNet nodelist on the Web. My goodness, has
it changed! Many networks within zone 3 no longer exist, including one of
the larger Sydney networks. Another formerly large Sydney network is now
only over a handful of systems.

Still saw a few names I recognise, but a lot of the prominent systems are
long gone.

what surprised (sortof) me was the number of BBS's which added 'internet
piggyback' onto their services. I say (sortof) because it doesn't really
surprise me that BBS ops gave free what they were payin' for, running a BBS
was a (monetary) losing proposition always, the generosity of public BBS ops
was 'best of breed' practices in extreme.

up until about 12 months ago, my BBS was still paying its own way (after more
than 10 years), but the vast majority of SysOps lost money hand over fist, but
you have to remember, running a BBS was a hobby for most, very few saw it as a
money making venture...

whats the point.... good question, look at it this way, a BBS is like hanging
out with friends at a small, cosy coffee shop, the internet is like hanging out
with friends in new york city at peak time.

Just taking a trip down memory lane....Some of the boards in Sydney I used
to call:

Cross Facts
The Night Rider
Paragon

amongst a whole heap of others..... but these were the ones i freq the most.

I used to run an underground BBS in the early 90's...only a single line
system but it was alot of fun...the modem would be tied up almost 24hrs a
day. I knew so many people from those days but I never actually met them.
One day I just decided to turn the BBS off, and flicked the switch...there
were alot of busts happening at the time and I could do without the
headaches so off it went....

not really, I suggest.

they've had a name change and no longer require direct dialin access. BUT
HEY !!! what was a BBS ? email, filespace + chatrooms ??? member and
non-member areas,,, we now call them email, FTP + chatrooms/newsgroups and
there are member and non-member areas.

netmail = email
echomail = newsgroups
filebase = FTP
userchat = IRC

still more than 10,000 in fidonet.

OK

there's some hardcore BBS sysops contributing,,, what was the _-*BEST*-_ BBS
software.

I was only ever an assistant sysop but I liked WildCat running under
DesqView for a four line system ('286 with a four port serial card and some
external modems). which I see is still a going thing,
http://www.santronics.com/

NOTE: (a further point) BBS's _-*ARE NOT*-_ dead.

Yeah but its not the same...I miss the modem sqealing and then being
prompted for "username"....and I miss chats with the sysop....i miss the
whole part of feeling you belong to a small community.....i even miss
offline mail readers like BlueWave. I don't miss file ratios, bowsing the
file list when offline then racing on to download at 1200bps before your
30mins ran out.

Anyone remember the transfer protocol HSLink? now that kicked ass!

it is, of all the things we do these days, the 'community' I miss most. I

Always a subjective matter, but I only ever ran RemoteAccess+ in production.

Played around with ProBoard, and quite liked it, but stayed with RA.

I still have my FrontDoor 2.20c.mL package here.

> NOTE: (a further point) BBS's _-*ARE NOT*-_ dead.

I jumped ship back in 1997. Stayed in FidoNet as a mail-only node and
continued in other official duties I had until around a year later I called
it quits on all fronts.

I tried Ezycom for a fair while but gave up waiting for it to support long
file descriptions so I switched to RA2.

I ran it under OS/2, with good old frontdoor 2.12 from memory.

Basically, HSLink was u/l d/l and chat at the same time, similar to
Bi-modem, but i never used that. HSLink was a little difficult to get it set
up as I remember, but once running, it rocked.

Qmodem was my term of choice back then....

I ran the BBS on a386dx4 100 with 16meg for a few years, using DV 2.42, switched
to OS/2 and things ran smoother, with more uptime ...

Likewise on hardware :) well till the 386 mobo went to sleep.....for good,
then used a 486 dx2/66 I had fantastic uptime, the only thing that gave
it a headache was when there was a couple ppl trying to play lord2 ar
same time, personnaly I hated that load of tripe... I did find with DV
tho, that the more windows you had open the better it appeared to run.
and I dont mean it just reflected better on screen writes...
Opps actually I tell fibers, I had 2 headaches, lord2 and Qemm 8, that set
thunderbyte off like a rocket, teh first night it woke me up its internal
siren screaming at maint (4am), I recall thinking all hell broke lose in
the street LOL..till I got out of doziness and realiased
what it really was, I then spent hours trying to find out why, gave
up realiseing I had little time left before work so I pissed it off and
instlaled Q7.5 and it went back to purring again and there it stayed
untill 2 years ago when I hit that magic button, in fact I dont even know
if that 486 would fire up still, come to think of it, wtf did I do with it
hrmmmmm oh well, I noticed n640 has as many nodes in it now as I could
count with one hand, where it was close to the larges net years ago.

Cheers

Who's running the BBS registry these days? Do they have an Internet presence
from which the files can be grabbed? When I was still around, Greg Kuhnert
was running the show after Rodney Creer had resigned. (Or is my memory
shot?)

A search on Google didn't turn up much.

after Rodney it may well have been Greg, whoever it was let it die, many tried
to get thier listing updated, but he simply refused to answer netmail or email

http://members.netunltd.com.au/users/panda/

Stephen Gibbs is the co-ord of his BBS list...

Never had those problems myself, from memory. Really cannot remember the
sequence of events. I do recall that Greg was the NSW coordinator.

Thanks for the update and the URL; even though I'm well and truly out of the
BBS and FidoNet scene, it's always enjoyable to see what's happening these
days, and who's still around.

Just looked up your BBS. I remember your name! Don't remember if we ever
chatted in any of the sysop echoes, however.

you are right. but it was something about a BBS that made it special
for its users, that they were all being part of a real local
community.

i made a great many freinds through my BBS, would not have been
possible on the internet.

Anyone remember my favourite - "Terminate" by Bo Bendtsen?? A really
great terminal program I used to use all the time back in the BBS days :)

Half way through the (dos) install a little lecture on "do not
underestimate the power of information" would appear, complete with random
ASCII characters flying across the screen... in fact the whole program was
full of coloured ASCII text and 'images' (hey that's another one that bit
the dust when the net arrived.. remember all those colour ASCII pics you'd
get when logging on to a BBS? they were so cool;)

Anyone feeling nostalgic? http://www.terminate.com/tour/tour.html

Mailer.
Use to use telix, then Fd Terminal.
