My vote is that Triple J stops rigging these lists by providing
pre-selected choices.

Sure, you can choose your own from their "Full song list to jog your
memories" - but if that's JJJ's idea of "full" then they obviously get
different record in Sydney stores than in the rest of the country :)

Here's my predition for the top ten in no particular order

evermore - its too late
eskimo joe - from the sea
franz ferdinand - take me out
grinspoon - hard act to follow
killers - somebody told me
john butler - something's gotta give
missy higgins - scar
powderfigner - bless my soul
spiderbait - black betty
u2 - vertigo

missy higgins for #1 even though that particular song has been playing on
triple j for years and was majorly overplayed this year.

A lot of BIG cross-over hits above. I'd define 2004 as being the year where
JJJ led the explosion in Australian music and heavily influenced commercial
radio.

> u2 - vertigo

This was never played by JJJ - at least not outside of any specialist show.

Its burnout factor will work against it, IMO. And let me guess, we're
likely to see another Australian act take out top honours? Ah yes, like
clockwork.

didn't think so. was looking for a tenth song for the list and didn't want
to repeat an artist already listed. it's a fairly obvious year for the top
ten i thought, I made the list jotting down tongs as i voted for my own
preferences. but it isn't easy picking a number one because as you said, a
lot of them (scar, black betty) were huge hits, but burned out. for an
international artist to take it out i'd go with franz ferdinand, but for
australian i'm sticking with missy higgins.

the dissociatives were a last minute ommission from my top ten. i've got
mixed feelings about their popularity and think their lack of recent hits
might be detrimental. surely 'somewhere down the barrel' would be in there
with a chance. have i forgotten any 'hits', keeping in mind the top ten is
usually compiled of commercially played hits.

I dunno about that... the charts were reflecting Triple J stuff way back
when I was listening, and I haven't listened to Triple J since Merrick
and Rosso left, so that's quite some time ago. These days when I
encounter them flicking thru the stations I hear crap and quickly move
on. That said, most of the stuff listed above doesn't really strike me
as very Triple J anyway, some of it sure, but I don't see why commercial
radio wouldn't play it, it's great!! JBT bore me to tears though.

I still remember my first commercial FM station (I live regionally)
being very different to the format they have now, it was kind of like
Triple J, before they went all alterna-crap, back when they actually
played a much wider variety of music. Needless to say I prefer the
former version of both! Sob.

These days the charts don't really reflect JJJ anymore, IMO. It's not until
the commercial stations pick up their music when singles and albums on
JJJ's playlist make inroads into the chart. "Back in the day" JJJ had
direct influence on consumers. Nowadays, either their audience is too small
or they just don't buy records like they used to.

Incidentally, above I was mostly reflecting on how commercial radio have
taken aboard a lot of the easier-listening songs from JJJ's playlist. I
think Nova (and even Video Hits) are the driving factors, because when they
follow JJJ's lead, Austereo is only a week away before adding it to their
top stations' playlists. And when it charts, ARN comes on board.

And for what it's worth, outside of Delta Goodrem and the Australian Idols,
it seems all the Australian music to have made inroads - sales-wise - have
been JJJ tunes.[*]

All of them were played heavily by JJJ. For what it's worth, when I say
"influencing commercial stations" I've really taken a liberal
interpretation of "they play these songs 1-4 weeks before the commercial
stations." As long as JJJ are ahead of the game, I'm gonna continue to
state that they're an influence. Others may disagree. ;)

I only started listening to JJJ from 1997, but even then, I wasn't really
into it until 1999 or so.

I'm a chronic channel surfer so I do a fair bit for short periods of time.

I understand what you're saying. I love the fact that they still breakin

As long as they continue to bring new music to me before the spam radio
stations I'll be listening.

Ok maybe years ago JJJ was king and no one had much options. Its 2005 and
here in Sydney the FM dial has many alternatives including a playlisted
24HR station : 94.5 FBI - which is superior to JJJ in some ways.
Differences: no news, no left wing provocations, mindless chattering,
less nu-rock.

Rural areas might be a different matter, but no one can say that JJJ are
the only alternative in Sydney metro and those who do are JJJ fanatics,
ignorant or liars.

Popularity of JJJ can be attributed to the following:

-National broadcast - signal reaches wide area

-The belief that you heard it first on JJJ, JJJ is not commercial, is
alternative etc - even though other alternatives have existed for some
time. Many people still believe (or want to) JJJ is the only thing in
town even here in Sydney, refusing to listen to anything else inc FBI.

- Peer pressure: All your 14-30yo mates listen to JJJ. JJJ is maybe a
part of youth culture (roll-eyes!)

- Political: See peer pressure. You want to be liked and be IN? - better
start hating the US, Howard, macdonalds, cars, planes.. and love the
green stuff.

Besides the internet might be the future of radio broadcasts and then
geography will have no bearing. What will happen when our receivers can
get FBI & co anywhere ? It *will* start to affect JJJ.. Broadband is also
going cheaper and its only a matter of time before more people will
discover the new stuff by downloading it. You can already see signs of
the change with every third person sporting an Ipod or similar DAP.
Magazines like Drum Media are already superb in their broad coverage of
new music and should be considered as alternative guides.

Enjoy your JJJ now but don't get so confident. There are other stations
who don't have the flagship name, but there are young, fresh and hungry
while JJJ's problems are getting bigger by the year.

There are 994 songs in that list. Even if they did put all of them on their
playlist, that would average out to 19 adds per week. Incredible.

In reality though, JJJ add around 10-16 songs per week to their regular
playlist. The rest must be from the specialist shows or are DJ favourites
(which would explain U2's inclusion).

Well yes I am actually.

You should know that "Australia" didn't exist in 1788.

"Australia" day used to be called ANA for Australian Natives Association.

It is only sine 1988 that it has been taken over by the raggle taggle
patriotic fringe.

Umm...

Exactly what are you smoking, and where can I get some?

As an old fogie, I can remember celebrating Australia day long before 1988.

Also, I've never heard of "Australian Natives Association", let alone heard
Australia day called that.

As for being a "raggle taggle fringe", well you might consider going out to
a local park on Australia day and see just how big the fringe is. It could
prove educational.

For me, I think Australia is a pretty great place. Nowhere near perfect,
but it still has plenty going for it. On Jan 26th I'll be pretty happy to
spend some time thinking about that and (seeing as this is aus.music)
singing about it.

Hey if everyone else wants to have a public holiday, who am I to stand in
the way of people having fun. I'll just ask you to do this the next time you
see such a crowd. Ask them what the hell they are commemorating. Not just
celebrating (we all like a day off like I said). Australia Day does not
resonate for 98% of people because they don't know what it means. It's not
like July 4th in the U.S. or Bastille Day in France or Waitangi Day in N.Z.

We can take pride in creating the second most racially diverse nation on
earth. "Australia" Day is just not an appropriate day to celebrate it. It
means nothing. How about Federation Day instead?

Well, you certainly convinced me. Thanks for your carefully reasoned
argument.

> Do some research boy and then come back to me.

"boy"???? Are we in Australia, 2005, or Georgia 1950? I enjoy a good
debate, but you have to behave like a grown-up, please.

Why is research necessary? You said that '"Australia" day used to be called
ANA for Australian Natives Association' prior to 1988. If that were true,
why have I never heard anybody call it that? I've been around for a number
of Australia Days prior to 1988.

On what basis do you make the claim? Do you recall hearing it referred to
as that? If so, by whom? Is there a reference to this?

Notwithstanding the above, I have nothing better to do tonight (I have no
life :-( ) so I did a quick bit of Googling.

According to the Googled web sites:

- Australian Natives Association (ANA) was formed in 1871, in Victoria.
- It was an Anglo-Celtic group with white-supremecist leanings.
- It played an important part in promoting Federation.
- In 1936 they flew an Australian flag, decorated with the letters "ANA"
from their Perth office. This annoyed the Prime Minister of the day, but it
was determined that it wasn't illegal/
- In 1993, they merged with Manchester Unity (a mutual fund!!!) to form
"Australian Unity" (http://www.australianunity.com.au).
- They now sell various insurance and investment products.

Other than the flag thing, they don't seem to have done anything of note
between 1901 and 1993.

Am I missing something?

I don't know what affect that a 2 FM station regional market (like Dubbo)
does to Triple J, but in a 1 FM station regional market like where I'am its
a salvation... :)

But when is it getting played? During the day they will spin a few new
songs over and over (once a shift) and a lot of older stuff. They do
often through a few different ones into the mix occasionally though.

You didn't do very much.

http://www.australianunity.com.au/au/info/australiaday.asp?source=leftmenu

You see, it was called ANA day before it was called Australia day (that's
because Australia didn't exist in 1788, Flinders didn't even give it the
name until 1824 or didn't they teach you that in primary school???)

And yes, you are right. The ANA were a earlier version of One Notion.

So what.
