Australian music should be judged equally with the rest of the world.
It shouldn't be favoured or judged more leniently, just because this is an
Australian list, or because we are Australians.

A while back I heard some woman (to do with a government department I think)
talking about how to market Australian artists, and she said she wanted to
be able to say. "They are fantastic! Have a listen. Aren't they great?!"....
When the people agreed, she'd then add, "... oh, and by the way, they are
Australian".

Let the music stand on it's own. If it cannot, well then....

Here are 2 new Australian bands I found recently, that pass with flying
colours:
Lior (Sydney) http://www.cdbaby.com/lior
Namaste Jake (Brisbane) http://www.namastejake.com/

Both have excellent songs, and fantastic vocals!!
I judge them the same way as I judge every band or artist I hear.
I don't favour them because they are Australian.
I favour them, because they ARE good!!

Couldnt agree more.

Thanks for the links (although I already knew about Lior :-)

Perhaps we can keep them coming:

Although I am slightly biased, being a huge Fruit fan. They are a case
in point about not being mentioned often in Australia, because they dont
have the exposure of other local or international acts. Despite this,
they have a huge following in the US, and were award winners at the
recent ALMAs (Best Up And Coming Live Act in Australia, and pipped at
the post by Powderfinger for Best Live Act in Australia).

Syndey siders might be familiar with:

Although I certaintly agree with the politics of your post, you are wrong.
This news group is supposed to be for the discussion of Australian music.

well, yes and no.
certainly an australian act should be able to stand by itself as being
worthwhile.
however the problem is that many people get swept away by overseas music,
but don't realise there are as good or superior bands in australia doing
similar music, who just don't have the advertising budget of the big name
overseas acts.
One example is hip hop music. Granted, its a style of music that originated
in the US but it has been around for some time, and many australian acts
have developed their own style of it that is superior to many of the
cookie-cutter US acts, and without the annoying american accent.

...and discussions about the local music scene, which would include anything
to do with the local industry, concerts (the nationality of the act being
irrelevant), to the chart (discussion about radio should be kept in
aus.radio.*; a.r.broadcast gets more traffic than aus.music so it'd probably
be better to post there anyway).

I don't think there ever was a proper charter for aus.music, but hopefully
somebody can prove me wrong.

Yeah, but the quote came from an off the cuff observation I made that there
appeared to be little interest in Australian music shown in a poll held in
an Australian music news group.

Agreed......but I challenge anyone to beat Butterfly Effect. Download Black
Lung at www.mp3.com.au/butterflyeffect
Best live band I've seen in about 5 years. Their new single "The Cell" is
#32 on the JJJ Net 50. #2 in AIR charts.
