7. This week's top 50:
She's not budging. The winner of Britain's "The X Factor" series
from 2006, Leona Lewis, spends a third week at number one with
"Bleeding Love". Her domination of the singles chart now extends
to the albums chart as her newly released "Spirit" debuts at
number one on this week's albums chart, finally knocking
Timbaland's "Shock Value" from the top spot. Meanwhile,
Timbaland's "Apologize", which spent 8 weeks at number one,
is now a certified double-platinum seller as it clocks up its 12th
week in the top 3. Soulja Boy enters the top 5 with "Crank That"
while the Potbelleez's venture into the top 5 last week was
short-lived as "Don't Hold Back" dives to number 9 this week.
Last week's highest new entry was not that high at all, but
it belonged to Rihanna's fourth single from her current album,
the track "Don't Stop The Music", which entered at number 22.
That song makes a massive leap up the chart this week, bulleting
15 spots to come in at number 7 and becomes her 7th top 10 hit
since her debut smash "Pon De Replay" in late 2005.
Finally, after 12 weeks, Chris Brown goes top 10 with the
hit "Kiss Kiss". And leaving the top 10 is the Rogue Traders
with "I Never Liked You" and Mika's "Happy Ending".
Six brand new entries into this week's top 50, and for the first
time in 2008, we have a top 10 debut.
2. PIECE OF ME - Britney Spears
CD singles chart: #2
Digital track chart: #2
The media has been saturated recently with coverage of what
many term the "melt-down" of Britney Spears. It began late
last year with her divorce from Kevin Federline, followed
by the failed custody battle of her children, driving
offences, a stint in a drug rehabilitation centre, the
revelation that she suffers bi-polar disorder and several
involuntary psychiatric hold orders placed upon her.
This was the girl who became one of the most popular
musical artists in recent times, kicked off in 1999
with her chart-topping debut "Baby One More Time"
when she was 17. Hit after hit followed, and she was
the girl that all the boys wanted and that all the girls
wanted to be.
Returning to music in 2007 after a career break which saw
her start a family, she released her fifth studio album
"Blackout" late in 2007, just as the turmoil in her private
life began to escalate out of control. They sometimes
say that there's no such thing as bad publicity, and in
Britney's case this has held true. "Blackout" is a
certified platinum seller and spawned the number 3
hit, "Gimme More" in October last year. This week the
album's second single, "Piece Of Me", goes one better,
debuting at number 2. Her chart resurgence is not
just limited to Australia. In the US, "Gimme More"
went top 3, becoming her most successful single there
since her debut track, "Baby One More Time", last
decade. "Piece Of Me" is doing huge things across
Europe, and like in Australia, went to number 2 in the UK.
The music video for "Piece of Me" was filmed in November
at an exclusive Hollywood nightclub and restaurant with a
budget of around half a million dollars.

12. LOW - Flo Rida featuring T-Pain
CD singles chart: (not released yet)
Digital track chart: #10
The biggest selling single in the US this week belongs to
28 year-old American rapper Tramar Dillard who goes by the
name of Flo Rida. His debut album "Mail On Sunday", is
out soon and from that album comes his massive hit, "Low",
which debuts at number 12 this week.

20. WANNA BE STARTIN' SOMETHIN' 2008 - Michael Jackson with Akon
CD singles chart: (not released yet)
Digital track chart: #14
49 year-old American singer, Michael Jackson, was a dominant
force on the charts around the world from the late 1970s to the
late 1990s. He is cited as the "Most Successful Entertainer
of All Time" by the Guinness World Records and his "Thriller"
album from 1982 was the world's best selling album ever,
going 12 times platinum here in Australia alone.
His strange personal antics, allegations of child molestation,
extensive use of plastic surgery and skin colour changes have
kept Michael Jackson in the public spotlight despite not having
released any new albums since 2001's "Invincible" which gave
him a top 5 hit with "You Rock My World". Since then, he's
only put out a few "greatest hit" type albums.
Later this month, Michael will celebrate the success of his
"Thriller" album with the release of "Thriller 25" to mark
25 years since "Thriller" was a hit. The new album includes
all of the original album's 9 tracks (7 of which were
released as singles), plus new remixes and re-recordings of
some of those songs. The album's first single to be released
is "The Girl Is Mine", which was originally a duet with Paul
McCartney, but has now been remixed with Paul's vocals removed
and added new lyrics rapped by Will.I.Am. The US and Australia
are being given a different first single than the rest of the
world, instead getting "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" which
has been reworked with Akon on lead vocals and Michael on
backing vocals. That single debuts at number 20 here in
Australia, Michael's first top 50 hit single since 2001.

40. HERE I COME - Fergie
CD singles chart: (not released yet)
Digital track chart: #34
Yet another single is lifted off Fergie's triple-platinum
selling "The Dutchess" album. The album has yielded 5 singles
(excluding the digital-only "Big Girls Don't Cry" remix),
and all of them have gone top 5. The album's sixth single,
"Here I Come", features a sample of The Temptations song
"Get Ready", and it debuts at number 40 this week.

43. HARDER, BETTER, FASTER, STRONGER (ALIVE 2007) - Daft Punk
CD singles chart: (not released yet)
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)
The French house duo of Daft Punk enjoyed notable success
in Australia in the late 1990s and early 2000s with tracks
like "Around The World" (number 1, August 1997) and "One More
Time" (number 10, April 2001). One song that never made
it onto the Australian charts was the track "Harder, Better,
Faster, Stronger", which featured on Daft Punk's gold-selling
"Discovery" album and was extensively sampled in Kanye West's
massive hit from late last year, "Stronger". A live version
of "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" was recorded in Paris
for Daft Punk's live album "Alive 2007". That album is
a certified gold seller and the live single debuts at number
43 this week.

47. SCREAM - Timbaland featuring Keri Hilson and Nicole Scherzinger
CD singles chart: (not released yet)
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)
Timbaland's album "Shock Value" has just just completed a
5 week stay at number one, having spawned a mixed bag of
singles. There were two huge chart-topping singles -
"The Way I Are" with Keri Hilson and "Apologize" with
OneRepublic. However, there were a couple of poorer
charting singles, those being "Give It To Me" with
Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake which only peaked
at number 16 but did spend 26 weeks in the top 50. And
then there was "Throw It On Me", a collaboration with
Swedish rock band The Hives which peaked at number 50.
The fifth single from "Shock Value" sees Keri Hilson
return, but joined by The Pussycat Dolls' lead singer,
Nicole Scherzinger. The single "Scream" debuts at number
47 this week.
