Geoff Marr, who played bass for Matt Moffitt in a recent line-up of the band
tells Undercover News Matt died in his sleep on Wednesday night from a
suspected seizure.
According to Marr, Matt was recently talking about taking the band on the
road and had written new material. "I was expecting a call from Matt and
instead it was his sister Annabelle telling me he had died" Geoff said.
In a prepared statement Geoff has written "It is with a heavy heart that I
advise of the passing of my friend and former colleague Matt Moffitt, one of
Australias foremost musicians and songwriters, aged 47. Matt came to fame
via his groundbreaking Australian band Matt Finish. His classic song "Short
Note", from the album of the same name, formed part of the backdrop of
contemporary Australia in the late 1970s and into the 1980s. Hundreds of
thousands of Australians know the song. Matt was the eldest son of the late
Ian Moffitt, acclaimed author and journalist. Matt was a real talent. I'll
miss him. My sincere sympathies to the Moffitt family"
Matt Finish had a Top 40 hit with 'Short Note' in 1981, after their break
through EP featuring 'Mancini Shuffle'. The 'Short Note' album went to #18
in Australia in 1981.
Matt is survived by his mother, three sisters and a brother.

god bless you mathew, you were a very talented guy whose albums were among
the most original and inventive ever released by an australian act.
R.I.P.
your friend,

bloody great album.
i was working with those guys around that time in various support spots etc,
and when that recrod came out, we were all blown away. hell, even rob riley
played great on it!...:)
"out on those moments", "words and wars", "always another", "blind and
running"....so many great textured songs. bertie was a cool addition but he
bailed out half way thru a tour because he couldnt put up with the typical
bullshit that went on. john prior played with me on several projects and i
helped out on his latter stuff doing some production and playing live with
him and his band.fabulous drummer,. did you know that rick and john had to
re-record the bass and drums for "short note" album because it all got
erased by mistake?. LOL!
but matt finish in their heyday, at the manzil room, the royal antler, the
civic, tivoli, that joint at cammaray(what was it called again, the "el
something or other"? a great aussie pub gig) was the single most exciting
live act around.
and "fade away" the EP was another GREAT record! (colin lee hong, loudest
mixer in oz at the time)
playing live, they were fuking *dangerous*, man.
i see his "official website" has a greatest hits CD listed which contains
some stuff off "word of mouth". hopefully thats still available.
::sigh:: what a sad occurrence.

Agree. I got "Word Of Mouth" back in '83 or so, IIRC. "Always Another"
and "Out On Those Moments" were the best tracks, IMHO. I lost the
album somehow over the years, and it's a shame that no CD version is
available. :-(
I remember sneaking into a northside Brisbane pub to catch Matt Finish
(was only 15 at the time). Incredible show.
