Something happened on Hey Hey tonight and I missed the thrust of what
was going on.

A band called "Reef" or "Reep" or something like that played the final
number. I'm not familiar with them, but the audience obviously knew
them well. (I'm a bit of an "old fogey" and don't always follow the
latest groups).

They introduced their song by saying "This is for Red Symons, freak of
nature", then played their song. I couldn't understand many of the
words, so I'm not sure what the song was about.

When they finished, Daryl Sommers was quite angry - he apologised to the
sound and lighting crews and said that the band had played a different
song to the one that had been rehearsed. He called them "very
unprofessional" and then said the next week there would be someone with
some real talent, John Farnham.

Did anyone else see this? What was the song about? Was the song
offensive, or did Daryl simply not like them changing at the last
minute?

The band is Reef, BTW.
No I didn't see it, but it does sound strange because on HHIS, the
overseas music acts usually play to an instrumental version of their
song, with only the vocals being live. Don't know what the reason for
this is (they seem to do OK on Recovery), but I guess one of the reasons
is that they can control which song will be played. Did Reef make a
special request to play their songs live or something?

The other thing is - the show isn't live. . .couldn't they have just cut
it?

I only saw the end when Darryl apologised - my guess is that HHIS asked
Reef to mime, they refused and played live, and messed around cause they
could!
BTW One of the funniest things I've seen on HHIS (and there is not many
funny moments from HHIS that come to mind) was Faith No More, who were
miming, but Mike Patton just held the mike to his mouth and kept his mouth
shut as the (pre-recorded) vocals emenated from the PA!!!

They were on JJJ today. I didn't hear all of their explanation but it seems
that Reef were supposed to play "Consideration" but they opted to play "Yer
Old" instead without informing Hey Hey.

The band is 'Reef' who are an alternative band and not the sort of band
one would expect to see on Hey Hey. They explained what happened in an
interview on Triple J - they were going to play a ballad, which they
practised in rehearsal. Once the show started they realised what sort of
show Hey Hey was (ie: tosh) and instead played a rockin' tune called
'You're Old', dedicated it to Red and cheesed off big Darryl.

Wish I'd seen it. I don't like the show or the man.

It was before Easy - possibly on their first tour (Real Thing Album tour)
and the song was Epic (it was quite a few years ago)

If Daryl is supposed to be such a tight arse about guests playing live,

A really late reply to this, but I can tell you that when Reef toured Australia a couple of years after, they did a live set at Channel V studios (hosted by Andrew G) for a15-20 fans, who got to ask them questions in between songs.

One of them cheekily asked if they were going to play "Hey, Hey It's Saturday?"

Gary mentioned that they were asked to play "Place Your Hands" but whilst "Red Faces" was going on, they took exception to Red Symons making fun of one of the young female contestants, calling her "a freak of nature".

In their words they thought that "Hey, Hey" was a shit show, and stood up for the girl by playing "Yer Old" instead, sarcastically dedicating it to Red Symons, the freak of nature.

I'm glad that show ended and found it cringeworthy they gave it a temporary run a couple of years back. In typical fashion, Aussie viewers over-glorified that show despite the fact that Red Symons was, and always had been a f*ckwit, and Daryl Sommers was a one trick pony, which showed with his numerous failed shows ever since.
