12.45pm (AEDT) MOTORCYCLING legend Mick Doohan and his partner Selina Sines
have parted company, it was revealed today.

Family sources said the couple, who have a five-month-old daughter,
separated soon after spending Christmas together on the Gold Coast.
Doohan, the five-time world 500cc champion, retired from the sport last
month.

He was in Japan today where he announced he would head a new Honda grand
prix factory- backed racing team.

It is believed Ms Sines, 27, and the couple's baby, Alexis, were still on
the Gold Coast but the couple's Pacific Waters mansion appeared to be
deserted today.

Only yesterday Doohan announced that he would swap his leathers for a suit
this year.

The former champion, who was forced to retire from motorcycle racing late
last year after sustaining injuries in a 200km/h practice crash in May, said
he would become the general manager of a new team with 125cc and 250cc world
champion Valentino Rossi.

During the announcement Doohan revealed he would spend more time overseas.

"Honda has given me a unique opportunity to stay involved in the sport in a
hands-on role, and it's something I'm looking forward to and appreciate very
much," the 34-year Queenslander said.

"I'll continue to live in Monaco most of the year to get to the various
races.

"The travel and lifestyle will be much the same as before, except I won't be
riding motorcycles on race weekends."

Doohan was forced into retirement after suffering serious injuries in last
May's crash, including a broken shoulder, knee and wrist.

Announcing his retirement, Doohan, who almost lost his leg after crashing
seven years ago, said that a rider's career was comparatively short.

"There's a point in time when it happens to everybody in sport," he said.

Doohan spent 11 years at the top of his sport and in 1997 rewrote the record
books with 12 wins, 12 pole positions and 12 fastest laps from 15 races.

He started riding motorbikes at the age of eight.

BTW, is it just me, or does this "announcement" look more like its from
womans weekly than aus.moto??? Why the fsck doesn't Mick get to have a
reasonably private personal life like the rest of us???

Yea a law suit I bet.

Ah thats no good to hear. I wonder if he will come back in 2001 for 1 crack
at the world supers after all the injuries have healed. I would absolutely
love to see that. He was quoted as saying such things a few years ago.

Hopefully Foggy will still be riding if this ever happens, and Mick can
kick his ass too.

"Id like to see that".

Rob :)

Oh, and another thing. Is Rossi just another Italian wizz kid that has
heaps of promise on a 500, but gets bitten a few times and loses the plot
like Biaggi and Capirossi? Hmmm, time will tell.

All the best for Garry McCoy this year, and I hope the major sideways
action continues. That is an absolute pleasure to watch.

Im still gunna miss Mick out there whooping ass.

Or maybe with his injuries he has had to convert to a Shaft Drive and can't
get it up anymore?

It will take time, but I think he will go far. His mouth to talent
ratio is certainly better than Biaggi.

Apparently Red Bull now have the services of a suspension guru who
formerly worked with Olivier Jaque. So it maybe that the bike stops
sliding as much and starts going faster...

Yes - there is something missing without Mick. but watch Rossifumi. He
is more mature than one might think and he enjoys a lot. What will
Bigproudsuperstar Biaggi think, when he gets de-classed? Big fun
coming up - cant wait!!

I was reading last night that there has been a few pull outs (bike racing im
talking) for this year and looks like McCoy in the 500's and Westy in the 250's are
about the only aussies doing it at the GP's. OUCH !!!! Wow, how things have changed.

I still dont know about Rossi though. Modern era of 500 racing not kind to the
Italians so far. Cadalora, Capirossi, Biaggi etc, and now Rossi maybe. See what
happens after the bike bites him a few times, although I must admit, hes certainly
well managed. Kinda like Lawson/Doohan, now Doohan/Rossi. Well see I spose. Heaps of
pressure though for him to perform. He certainly is a quick fellow so far.

I reckon Kenny JR myself. Ummm, my top 3....Kenny, McCoy, Gibernau.

Kenny agreed. Good to see a Suzi again leading the pack. Reminds of
the good old Kevin days. Not as spectacular (expect McCoy on
intermediates), but that might be because bikes are different. 2 and 3
goes to Honda. Will be hard for them. I think a champ can smell a
champ and that's why Valentino will start show time. In reality we
know nothing and think he just another kid. That's clever of him. And
the Spanish or better Catalans (Is Sete Catalan too)? Alex will
receive better material and he developed during the hard saison
finish. There was incredible pressure on him in Spain. What a relieve.

My podium Kenny, Rossi, Criville.
