Hi Ron,

I'll try to but it can be hard to give advice to those who may not have a
good understanding of how it all works.

Sounds like an intermittent electrical fault ( these can be the worst to
trace )

As it's ex-police it may also have had a lot of accessories fitted then
removed. So the wiring may not be standard.

If I were you I'd systematically trace through the ignition circuit,
checking for loose & damaged wiring & defective components include in your
checks
the following components:-

Ignition switch, kill switch, battery, fuse box, spark plugs, plug caps,
ignition coils, ignition control unit, pulse generator coil.

Include all the wiring between these components, a multimeter is a
must for checking the resistance of the ignition coils and pulse generator.

It will also allow you to check the continuity of the wiring.
(whether it is in good condition & allowing current to pass along it)

Hope this helps

Good Luck

Mark.

Will it clutch start successfully?

If it will, it could be the same as my XJ900 back a few years, used to turn
over at full speed but not start. The problem there was low cranking
voltage, the starter took most of the power available and left the ignition
system with insufficient to operate properly.

In may case it was a poor battery and a voltage regulator that was allowing
too high a charge rate, changing the battery fixed the starting problem, the
regulator got changed later. These arent the only places to look though, a
worn starter motor can use more power than usual also leaving you with not
enough smoke in the wires to make it start.

The XJ series of bikes has a very weak transistorised ignition ignitor.
It needs full voltage to produce the required spark.
On the other hand the starter is very strong and will turn over the
engine on the lowest voltage available from the battery
I suggest charging the battery fully and trying again

As a good reference point try this website
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Speedway/7795/ and perhaps even
subscibing to the mailing list and asking for help ,there a lot of guys
who have the knowledge to help and will do so willingly
